Parents Can Apply Online through Kindergarten Connect, on the Phone in over 200 Different Languages, or in Person at an Enrollment Office
New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña announced that in order to give families additional time to apply to kindergarten the Department is extending the deadline from Friday February 14, 2014 to until Thursday, February 20, 2014. Parents of children who turn five years old this year are eligible to apply.
This year, for the first time ever, all families are able to apply via a single application called Kindergarten Connect. The simple, online application allows families to apply conveniently from home, without having to travel to individual schools. Along with the City’s new online option, parents can also apply over the phone or in person at any of the DOE’s 13 Enrollment Offices across the City. For families wishing to apply by phone or in person, over-the-phone interpretation service is available in over 200 languages.
Since its initial launch on January 13, Kindergarten Connect has provided families an easy way to apply for kindergarten. Preliminary data show that the new application process has been hugely successful: 85 percent of parents responding to our application survey have described the process as easy or very easy. And family’s satisfaction with the program has shown in the numbers – we have had more applicants this year compared to last year and in a shorter amount of time. The application allows parents to list their options in order of preference, with zones and admissions priorities remaining unchanged. Parents have the same options and school priorities they have always had, except with a simpler application process.
Parents wishing to apply online using Kindergarten Connect can visit the Kindergarten section online
or search NYC.gov for “Kindergarten Connect.” For those who want to apply over the phone, the number is 718-935-2400. Families can still apply in person, with translation services, by stopping by one of our Borough Enrollment Offices.
