NEW YORK—Live now on New York City Taxi TV is a new public service announcement featuring Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña and First Lady Chirlane McCray encouraging families to apply for thousands of new full-day pre-K seats opening in September.
The 30-second taxi PSA is part of an unprecedented push, including ads on bus shelters, buses and subways, robocalls to families in public housing, and a multilingual grassroots engagement effort in partnership with community groups and volunteers.
“Pre-K is the foundation for our City's long-term educational success. We want to make sure every family knows how to apply for pre-K in new full-day seats and in existing options,” said Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “With these ads, our work with community partners, and the help of everyday New Yorkers, we will make universal pre-K for thousands of 4-year-olds and their families a reality.”
“Pre-K is vital to New York’s future success. Getting an early education helped my children, Dante and Chiara, and can make a real difference for all of New York’s children. With only a few more days to go before the April 23rd public school registration deadline, we must get the word out and make sure families everywhere enroll their children in one of the City’s high-quality pre-K programs,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray.
Chirlane McCray: I am Chirlane McCray, the first lady of New York City. As a parent, I believe that our children must receive the best education possible as early as possible, and this begins with a high-quality pre-K program.

Carmen Fariña: That’s why we are expanding pre-K program options all over the city. Families of children born in 2010 can apply now for free pre-K. Public school applications are due April 23rd.

Chirlane McCray: Together let’s give our 4-year-olds a great start for life today.
New York City children who turn 4-years old in 2014 are eligible to apply to the variety of offerings available this September. The application deadline for public school options is April 23, and the Department of Education will notify families about public school placements in June. Families will also have an opportunity to apply for slots at community-based organizations later this spring.
Parents can learn about and apply for public school pre-K options online or by visiting a Borough Enrollment Office.
