Events in All 32 Community School Districts for the First Time. New Events Help Families Plan for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Gifted & Talented Admissions

NEW YORK – Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña today announced the new It’s Elementary! school admissions events. Starting November 1, there will be events in all 32 Community School Districts, where families can attend presentations and ask questions about the New York City Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Gifted & Talented admissions processes.

For the first time, there are events in all 32 districts – in previous years, there were only five boroughwide events. For the first time, the events will include all three elementary admissions processes; previously, separate events were held for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Gifted & Talented. As most families participate in all of these processes during a short period of time when their children are age 4 or 5, this change can save time for families looking to create a longer-term plan for their child’s elementary education or with more than one child in this age range.

For the first time, the events will also include stations where families can find their zoned and non-zoned school options, sign up to test for Gifted & Talented, and prepare to apply to pre-K and Kindergarten.

“Equity and Excellence for All means engaging parents as our partners, and the new It’s Elementary! events are really about meeting them where they are – by bringing these events into their neighborhoods and offering more and better information,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “I look forward to continued collaboration with families and educators to make admissions processes to all our great schools more accessible.”

“We’re committed to making it easier for families to find and enroll in the school that’s right for them,” said Josh Wallack, Deputy Chancellor for Strategy and Policy. “We are confident the It’s Elementary! Events are a real step forward – they’ll bring all the information families need for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Gifted & Talented under one roof, and into every neighborhood – and we look forward to building on this progress.”

Each It’s Elementary! event will have DOE staff – as well as interpreters and resources in all ten DOE languages – on hand to answer families’ questions and help them develop a plan for applying to pre-K, Kindergarten, and Gifted & Talented. Pre-K Enrollment Specialists will be present at events across the City to provide additional support for parents and families. Families can also learn about school services that support a child’s education, including transportation, SchoolFood, Special Education, and English Language Learner programs.

A list of events is below. Families are receiving postcards about It’s Elementary!, community partners are posting and sharing flyers in all 32 school districts, and families can also register at ItsElementary.Eventbrite.com, though registration is not required. Families can find additional information about elementary school admissions online, by calling 718-935-2009, or by visiting a Family Welcome Center
