Pediatric Optometrist (Consultant)

Position Summary

In collaboration with The NYC Department of Education (NYC DOE), The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) Office of School Health Vision Program, is hiring licensed Optometrists to provide optometry service to students attending private schools and NYC public schools.

Our program provides vision screenings, non-dilated optometric exams and free eyeglasses, to all students whose parents agree to have examined and meet the qualifications.

We serve students throughout New York City communities with very limited resources. Without these services, thousands of students would not otherwise receive optometric exams and free glasses. The expectation of this program is to screen 165,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our goal is to service close to 100,000 students in about 250 Community Schools with vision abnormalities, and to provide optometric exams and free glasses to an estimated 60,000 students.


Optometrists must:

  • Serve as Part-Time Medical Consultants at schools
  • Carry own basic optometric equipment; sample frame kits are provided:
    • Diagnostic kit (retinoscope, ophthalmoscope, penlight/transilluminator)
    • Trial frame and lenses
    • Near card
    • Accommodative test equipment (must use flippers)
    • Stereo test
    • Distance Chart (Aide brings Tumbling E chart)
    • PD ruler
    • Optional: portable lensometer
  • Have experience providing eye exams to children


  • All hired Optometrists must pass fingerprinting and background checks by the NYC Department of Education (DOE); to receive authorization to serve students in private schools and in NYC public schools
  • Be available to work from 8:15am for 4-6 Hour sessions at assigned schools
  • Travel citywide to attend scheduled sessions.


Current hourly rate is $133.66.
