Teachers for Summer Arts Institute for High School and Middle School students (Up to 16 positions): teachers of middle or high school dance (2), theater (drama) (3), film (3), instrumental music/band (2), orchestra/strings (2), visual art (2), and vocal music (4)



Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School, Queens. Planning meetings to take place at 333 Seventh Avenue, Manhattan.



Appointed New York City Department of Education certified teachers of dance, theater/drama, instrumental music/band, orchestra/strings, visual art and vocal music. Teachers presently working at Middle School or High School level preferred.                                                                                                                      


  • Three or more years of satisfactory experience teaching intermediate or advanced level courses to middle school and/or high school students in:
    • dance (esp. modern dance or modern jazz and dance composition)
    • theater (drama including classical works and/or musical theater, strong production and stage management experience required for one position)
    • film (digital filmmaking, Final Cut Pro editing systems)
    • instrumental music/band
    • orchestra/strings
    • visual art
    • vocal music (strong piano accompanist skills and experience required for two positions)
  • Familiarity with appropriate arts techniques, approaches and curriculum development aligned with the Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts Grades PreK-12.
  • Experience preparing middle school students for entry into specialized high schools and/or high school students for higher education in the arts.
  • Able to teach collaboratively with teacher colleagues and teaching artists.
  • Capable of involving and directing students in studio-specific activities.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership qualities, writing skills and ability to communicate creative ideas. 7) Knowledge of contemporary arts language and practice, and repertoire.
  • History of creative approaches to curriculum development/implementation.      


Note: Applicants for per session employment who are not employed in the Department of Education’s regular school program or adult education program shall be considered for selection only if no qualified day school teacher or adult education employee is available.



Teach a four week summer arts program for high school and/or middle school students in art, instrumental music (band), vocal music, film, orchestra (strings), theater (drama) or dance.  Collaborate with the NYC cultural community to extend learning in and beyond the classroom; attend meetings with staff to plan and ensure coordination of instructional program with other program elements; monitor and evaluate all programs and instructional activities. Assume responsibility for all students in discipline-specific classes.  Must attend planning meetings February through June and adjudicate at student auditions in March and/or April.



Commencing March 2019 through August 2019

March -June: Up to 30 hours for three planning meetings, two-day student auditions, Institute set-up on site in June, and Institute wrap-up in August.

July –August: 8:15 AM – 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday, up to 30 sessions, including rehearsals and public performances. 

(Up to 250 hours per position)

Note: As program is subject to funding, all dates, times, and hours to be confirmed


Per Session rates as per the UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Contingent Upon Funding Availability. (UFT or relevant Union/Organization).

Failure to obtain a valid waiver may result in the withholding of payment for hours worked beyond the maximum.
