TEACHER

NYC SPECIALIZED TEACHER ENHANCEMENT PATHWAY (STEP) PROGRAM Instructor (FALL 2019 AND SPRING 2020)

UP TO 2 POSITIONS AVAILABLE

LOCATION:

VARIOUS LOCATIONS

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

• NYCDOE licensed and appointed teacher with a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience; and

• Certification in either Bilingual Education or Secondary Students with Disabilities; and

• Received rating of Satisfactory, Effective, or Highly Effective in SY 18-19

• Classroom teacher in a Bilingual or Secondary Students with Disabilities classroom within the last 3 years

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Teaching skills:

• Demonstrates effective practice in planning, classroom environment, instruction, and professionalism, as evidenced by the Danielson Framework for Teaching

• Demonstrates strong instructional practice, as evidenced by content knowledge and rigorous instruction that is appropriate for the specific student population (Bilingual or Secondary Students with Disabilities)

• Demonstrates cultural competence and utilizes culturally sustaining teaching practices

• Creates a safe, equitable, inclusive classroom environment; and demonstrates high expectations with his/her students

• Models awareness of issues of equity in the classroom through a variety of instructional strategies

• Builds and maintains strong relationships with student families and communities

• Is a reliable, polished, professional and is able to demonstrative self-reflection to improve practice

Facilitation/Leadership Skills:

• Collaborates with high energy and drive to be a key player in launching a new program

• Desire to work with and develop teachers aspiring to build new content expertise

• Demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire, and connect with adult learners and build strong working and mentoring relationships

• Creates a positive, productive cohort culture for adult learners through strategies for engaging learners in blended learning

• Can model a variety of high quality instructional strategies

• Can adapt provided materials to meet the needs of adult learners without compromising ambitious outcomes for all

• Self-starter who plans and internalizes content in advance of sessions

• Highly engaging presenter who invites all learners to contribute to the discussion both virtually and in person

• Holds high expectations for students and colleagues

• Models habits of continuous improvement by being open to feedback and continually improving own practice as a facilitator

• Possess strong organizational and time management skills

• Effectively communicates and is able to articulate beliefs and thoughts behind actions, decisions and ideas for both students and teaching candidates

• Consistent and reliable access to email, phone, and the Internet.

• Commitment to facilitating online and in person professional learning sessions for approximately 25 program participants

• Proficiency with teaching technologies such as PowerPoint, SmartBoard, learning management systems, and cloud based interfaces

Program Commitment:

• Willing to invest in the success of the NYC STEP program and its teacher participants in mastering new student population (Bilingual or Secondary Students with Disabilities) teaching skills and ensuring that teacher participants reach ambitious goals with their students

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

Training:

• Complete staff training (Fall 2019)

• Approximately 6-12 hours of training over the course of 2-4 full and half days during the month of September 2019

• Attend quarterly development sessions throughout the school year

• Approximately 3 hours of ongoing training at 4 points during the 2019-2020 school year

Communication and Implementation:

• Communicate regularly, openly and collaboratively with the program staff in a timely way about teacher participant performance and professionalism

• Communicate with and accept feedback from program staff about ways in which you are supporting the teacher participant and your school in achieving program priorities and goals.

• Collect data and participate in data analysis related to teacher participant performance and program evaluation

Facilitation:

• Facilitate teacher participant learning within a series of integrated courses on key topics aligned to requirements

• Facilitation of in person content as well as moderation of online content for content intensive portion of program in September 2019

• Moderation of online content and facilitation of responsive in person sessions from September 2019-June 2020

• Evaluate mastery of skills based on candidate submissions

• Deeply internalize course curricula, including discipline specific visions for instruction and aligned content in order to support teacher participants in translating content to classroom practice

• Establish and reinforce a culture of achievement and access to rigorous instruction for all students that drives teacher participants to ensure that all students can achieve at high levels

WORK SCHEDULE:

• TRAINING HOURS UP TO, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

o APPROXIMATELY 6-12 HOURS OF TRAINING DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2019

o APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS OF ONGOING TRAINING AT 4 POINTS DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR (QUARTERLY, FROM Fall 2019 THROUGH Summer 2020)

• PER SESSION HOURS UP TO, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

o APPROXIMATELY 12 HOURS IN FALL 2019 TO FACILITATE AND MONITOR CONTENT INTENSIVE COURSEWORK (IN PERSON AND ONLINE)

o APPROXIMATELY 2-4 HOURS PER WEEK THROUGH THE DURATION OF THE PROGRAM (FALL 2019 THROUGH SUMMER 2020)

ADDITIONAL HOURS GRANTED UPON THE APPROVAL OF THE HIRING MANAGER.

SALARY:

The training rate of compensation is the contractual hourly staff development rate, which is currently $23.30.
