POSITION:                            

Summer Teaching Academy Director for the NYC Teaching Fellows Program (up to 45 positions available)

 

LOCATION:                           

Various locations   

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:             

NYCDOE licensed and appointed teacher with a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience

                                                                                                                                                 

SELECTION CRITERIA: 

  • Strong interest in new teacher development
  • Knowledge and experience with coaching models used to develop new teachers; experience with Teach Like a Champion techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with, inspire, and motivate adult learners quickly and build strong working and mentoring relationships
  • Experience managing adults in current or previous roles, particularly in setting expectations and providing feedback to support growth and development for both Fellows and summer staff members
  • Ability to smoothly prioritize and manage logistics and urgent issues, including operations, professionalism issues,relationship development and management between school staff and program staff
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative analysis to support decision making
  • Highly organized; able to create, execute, and oversee detailed project plans
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional skills in time management, including the ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting
  • Evidence of working successfully in teams or cooperative settings
  • Maintains a positive outlook, flexibility, and problem-setting mentality even in stressful situations

 

Preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate:

1+ years of experience in a teacher leadership role including, but not limited to, Mentor Teacher, Lead Teacher, Cooperating Teacher, NYCTF Summer Staff, Peer Collaborative Teacher, Model Teacher, Master Teacher, Collaborative Coach, Lead Coach.

 

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:              

Management/Leadership:

  • Manage and lead a team of up to 15 Summer School Collaborative Coaches, 1 Lead Instructor, and 1-2 Fellow Effectiveness Managers to support approximately 40 NYC Teaching Fellows; ensure each staff member is fulfilling responsibilities of their role and motivating Fellows to reach ambitious goals with students
  • Meeting with staff to align on Fellow performance and progress
  • Ensure staff members keep accurate and timely records of Fellow performance and professionalism in the program’s data tracking system
  • Coordinate formal evaluations of staff and Fellows
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with school leadership and summer school staff starting in Spring 2019
  • Establish and reinforce a culture of achievement that drives Fellows to ensure that all students achieve at high levels
  • Observe and give feedback on Lead Instructor-facilitated Skill-Building Sessions to increase impact of session on Fellows’ development and progress
  • Identify and act on trends in performance data to make action-oriented plans for improvement for individuals, small groups, and the entire cohort
  • Work with staff to implement interventions for struggling Fellows
  • Provide targeted, actionable feedback to Fellows as they practice foundational techniques so that Fellows understand the components of effective instruction, and can develop those components within their own teaching practice.
  • Model rigorous instruction and strong classroom management
  • Participate in training sessions for the role during the Spring outside of school hours, and support the training of other staff members
  • Oversee set-up, operations, and logistics at assigned site throughout the duration of summer school

 

Evaluation:

  • Conduct 15-minute observations of assigned Fellows during each Observation Round based on Fellows’ schedules and availability
  • Evaluate each Fellow using a rubric
  • Write a detailed observation report aligned to the rubric components for each Teaching Fellow and submit reports through an electronic database in accordance with program deadlines
  • Consult with school-based Collaborative Coaches and Lead Instructor about Fellow performance and development; provide targeted, actionable suggestions to NYCTF staff to help Fellows master the components of effective instruction

 

WORK SCHEDULE:              

Summer (July - August):

6 hours/day, 5 days/week for 5 weeks (exact start and end times vary by Summer School site) (approximately 150 hours) at the Teacher Rate (TR) as per the UFT contract.

 

SALARY:                                

As per Collective Bargaining Agreement
