POSITION:                 

DREAM Guidance Counselor: Guidance counselors support the social and emotional well being of DREAM students and support their families in learning about the NYC high school application process, as well as conduct family outreach.

(Guidance counselors who have retention rights in the Dream Summer Program will retain retention rights.)

 

DREAM SHSI is an extracurricular program of rigorous coursework designed to assist eligible rising 8th grade students in preparing for the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT).  DREAM coursework emphasizes learning ELA and math strategies needed for the SHSAT, solving problems under timed conditions, and practice with SHSAT questions.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:          

New York City Department of Education tenured and licensed Guidance Counselor with at least five years of satisfactory experience; Guidance Counselors presently working in the middle school level are preferred                                                                                                                                          

SELECTION CRITERIA: 

  • Satisfactory ratings from September 1, 2018 through June 30, 20201
  • Experience in middle school guidance and the high school application process
  • Knowledge of all NYCDOE policies and procedures with regard to the high school admissions policies, experience with MySchools, and strong knowledge of the eight specialized high schools
  • Demonstrated dedication to equity, making sure that all students receive the support they need to achieve a common standard
  • An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the complex emotional, social and academic needs of middle school students
  • Proven track record of using culturally responsive strategies when working with students and families
  • Experiencing facilitating parent workshops and knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Knowledge of national and state standards for counseling
  • Ability to promote and ensure a positive DREAM experience for all students
  • Experience with implementing positive behavior supports
  • Experience with modifying guidance pacing calendar in order to meet the needs of DREAM students
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Documented record of excellent attendance and punctuality
  • Strong computer and technology skills and experience using ATSSUM

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead guidance sessions, including virtually, to DREAM students on topics related to habits of mind, managing stress, the specialized high schools, the SHSAT, and the high school application process
  2. Conduct outreach to students/families and provide ongoing support to ensure students have the resources needed, including technology devices, to participate in remote learning, if needed throughout the fall
  3. Prepare student reports to reflect whole-child progress, incorporating DREAM academic progress as well as social/emotional development
  4. Connect DREAM students and families to appropriate or necessary resources and services
  5. Support Site Supervisors in maintaining attendance records and the use of ATSSUM
  6. Attend pre-program orientation/training meetings, as scheduled
  7. Liaise with host school leadership to ensure a successful summer experience for DREAM students and staff

 

WORK SCHEDULE:   

Instructional Days: Saturdays commencing Saturday, September 12, 2020 to Saturday, October 31, 2020

Instructional Hours:  8:30am – 1:00pm

 

HOURS UP TO, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF HOURS LISTED. ADDITIONAL HOURS GRANTED UPON THE APPROVAL OF THE HIRING MANAGER.

 

SALARY:                     

Per Session rates as per the relevant union/organization of the advertised title (UFT, CSA, DC-37 - Collective Bargaining Agreement).  Contingent Upon Funding Availability.
