School Social Worker – School Climate Clinical Specialists (Multiple Positions).


Assigned to a school serving grades K – 12


New York City Department of Education licensed School Social Worker (LMSW required/ LCSW preferred). For current DOE employees, you must also have been rated Satisfactory (S) for the past 3 years and have a satisfactory record of attendance and punctuality.


In School Year 2019-2020, the Department of Education (DOE) will add licensed social workers to provide direct clinical mental health services to students and schools at times of crisis through the Thrive initiative. School social workers will work closely with school administration and school staff to determine which children or families require ongoing support. School social workers will help identify which students and families have access to additional resources outside of the school and which students and families rely on resources primarily through the school. School social workers will provide information on signs and symptoms of students at risk of requiring more support and how to monitor students through time. School social workers will also collaborate regarding prevention of long-term issues after a crisis (post-vention services).

The Deputy Chancellor of School Climate and Wellness, social worker supervisors, and central staff provide initiative guidance and oversight.


  • Provide individual and group counseling with specific focus on issues affecting students in crisis, such as: behavioral incidents, child abuse, suicidal ideation/depression, physical or domestic violence, return from court ordered settings, history of long term suspension, known acute or chronic family stressors such as illness, substance abuse, incarceration, family member death, and cognitive, health and mental health, and developmental challenges.
  • Collaborate as needed with existing school teams to provide short term individualized support.
  • Provide short-term family counseling to manage crises; referrals and access to community related mental health and other support services.
  • Broker relationships between school, families and community providers.
  • Identify unmet basic physical, health and safety needs and develop and implement strategies to have those needs met.
  • Meet with students and their families in the community and/or their home when needed.
  • Keeps records of case management and clinical interventions; student progress; communication with school staff/administration and families; referrals.
  • Collaborate with school counselors, school social workers, mental health providers, parent coordinators, and other student support staff to share resources and information.
  • Attend professional development workshops and training, after school and/or weekends, for which the per session rate will be paid, and reasonable advance notice will be given.
  • Conduct professional development workshops for relevant school staff, as needed.
  • Report to and maintain strong professional relationship with Social Work Supervisor (including attendance at mandatory supervision sessions and all related paperwork).
  • Provide reports, data, and updates concerning the initiative when required.
  • Extensive citywide travel required.


  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices and ethical standards of School Social Work; the relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Understanding of diversity and sensitivity to differences in cultures and family structures.
  • Understanding of trauma and the effect of poverty on young people.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and commitment to attend professional development activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader and/or member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge about assessment, educational planning, transition services, and effective intervention strategies
  • Knowledge about community resources or other available services to assist students and their families in address problems affecting their social, emotional, physical and/or behavioral functioning
  • Experience working with or willingness to work with high-need and at-risk students and their families.
  • Knowledge of DOE policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success in initiating and maintaining open communications with students and families
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with other professional staff.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills


As per collective bargaining agreement / 36 hours 40 minutes per week (exclusive of 30-minute lunch) which is 6 hours 50 minutes per day (exclusive of 30-minute lunch). Hours: 8:30—3:50 daily.
