POSITION: 

Health Education Instructional Coach – up to three positions

Position summary:

Teaching students to take care of their minds and bodies builds a foundation that makes all other learning possible. The Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) guides schools in teaching 1.1 million students what they need to know to make healthy, informed choices now and throughout their lives. Through a four-year, $24M Health Ed Works initiative, the Mayor and the Chancellor have committed to establishing comprehensive Health Education as a foundational component of all New York City students’ education.  As part of the OSWP Health Education team, the Health Education Instructional Coach will help implement the Health Ed Works initiative by assessing the landscape of Health Education in schools Citywide, responding to teachers’ and schools’ needs, and increasing the ability of schools to deliver quality comprehensive Health Education that builds student knowledge and skills.

The Health Education Instructional Coach supports elementary, middle or high school level health educators Citywide through the design and delivery of professional learning experiences, including the delivery of comprehensive Health Education, HIV/AIDs, and LGBTQ affirming trainings. Additional responsibilities include completing needs assessments and action plans, providing training follow-up support, drafting and sharing instructional resources, and staying abreast of current Health Education rules and regulations, instructional best practices, and resources in the content areas of: mental health, injury and violence prevention, alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention, sexual health, etc.

ELIGIBILITY: 

Certified and licensed, appointed and tenured New York City Department of Education teachers with background and experience in Health Education

SELECTION CRITERIA: 

  • Licensed or certified teacher of Health Education and/or related field, strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Satisfactory (or Advance-equivalent) experience at the NYC Department of Education
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching comprehensive Health Education, including sexual Health Education preferred.
  • Experience designing, and delivering professional development for educators.
  • Deep understanding of NYS and National Health Education Standards, and National Sexuality Education Standards.
  • Knowledge of best practices and current trends in Health Education, school wellness policy and/or public health.
  • Familiarity with DOE recommended Health Education curricula.
  • Commitment to reducing health disparities for young people in New York City.
  • Experience using technology and web-based platforms in teaching Health Education.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
  • Strong team work ethic and desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative office.
  • Ability to prioritize, work independently, handle many responsibilities simultaneously, and provide ongoing follow-up.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

Professional development, coaching, instructional materials

  • Provide professional development and guidance to school-based personnel in comprehensive Health Education to improve student wellness, accelerate student learning, and increase Health Education frequency, compliance and quality across the district.
  • Design and deliver professional development and guidance to Health Education teachers to support quality Health Education through in-person and online trainings, and instructional coaching.
  • Facilitate online professional learning communities on the WeTeachNYC platform for health educators to share resources and share best practices.
  • Support in designing and training on a comprehensive K-12 Health Education Scope and Sequence for all New York City schools.
  • Provide follow-up support to training participants via phone calls, emails, school visits, and WeTeach communities to build understanding of post-training program implementation and provide instructional support.
  • Review and recommend Health Education materials to share with schools in content areas of: mental health, injury and violence prevention, alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention, sexual health, etc. Document and share successful implementation strategies in various schools.
  • Work closely with the Office of School Wellness Programs Curriculum, Trainings, and Events Team to coordinate training preparation and delivery, scheduling, registration, and communication with participants.
  • Assist in collection, entry, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to support project deliverables and program planning.

Capacity Building

  • With OSWP Capacity Managers, conduct school level comprehensive needs assessment (programmatic compliance and quality, scheduling, school culture and capacity, etc.). Develop and help implement individual school action plans to
  • Assist school-based personnel in disseminating knowledge about health and health among school staff, between schools, and within overall school communities.
  • Coordinate improvements in Health Education instruction and wellness through the customization of OSWP services, programs and the Health Ed Works initiative to meet the unique needs of principals, teachers and their respective schools, with an extra focus on School Wellness Programs and strategies to engage families.
  • Provide guidance and resources to school administrators, teachers and school-based personnel to increase the capacity of each school to develop or enhance a sustainable Health Education program and overall school wellness efforts. This includes frequent school visits to trouble-shoot and provide one-on-one support, as necessary.
  • Help schools strengthen health services linkages for students through a wide range of NYC community resources, including the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, medical centers, local organizations, and other partners.

Other

  • Assist with the preparation of reports.
  • Related tasks as needed.

 

SALARY: 

 As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

HOURS / WORK YEAR:

 As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.

School year plus five additional days during winter, spring or summer vacation period.
