Position Summary:

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) is responsible for the recruitment of high-quality teachers to meet the staffing needs of Department of Education (DOE) public schools and programs, as well as being responsible for initiatives to promote the equitable and quality distribution of teachers across all schools.  Research has repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the single most important variable in raising student learning.  The Office accomplishes its work through a strategic, data-driven approach.  Among TRQ’s responsibilities are to:

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become DOE public school teachers, to recruit a large, high-quality and diverse pool of candidates.
  • Design and manage recruitment initiatives, programs, and pathways for individuals to become DOE teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas.
  • Select a high-quality pool of candidates to become teachers through rigorous, research-driven, screening processes.
  • Design and implement high quality field experiences for teacher candidates in both alternative certification and traditional pathways.
  • Provide strategic assistance to schools to help them make optimal, local hiring decisions.
  • Lead teacher portfolio initiatives, including incentives to promote an equitable distribution of teachers across all schools, and especially to ensure that students with the greatest need are served by highly effective educators.

The Teacher Preparation Team, within the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality, works to ensure that our new teachers are well prepared for and supported in their beginning years as teachers.  This involves working closely with our alternative certification programs and university-based teacher preparation programs to ensure high quality, practice-based preparation for new teachers.  It also involves ensuring that all new teachers have access to the resources, training, and support they need to be successful in their first year.

The Teacher Preparation Team seeks a Teacher Trainer. The ideal candidate will be prepared to collaborate with partners to improve the quality of clinical preparation in NYC public schools, as well as build learning experiences for teacher candidates to prepare them to meet the needs of our city’s students. The Teacher Trainer will develop the pre-service teachers and teacher leaders (Collaborative Coaches, Lead Coaches, and Lead Instructors) who most directly support them. Trainers will be responsible for designing curriculum for pre-service teachers, and preparing and executing a high-quality, innovative teacher training and development program for new teachers. The role will include program oversight, communications, relationship management, and the design and delivery of instructional sessions for adult learners.

Selection Criteria:

  • Effective or Highly Effective teacher with a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience; middle school and high level experience preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in teacher training, coaching and development
  • Experience and success coaching/mentoring adults; knowledge of specific coaching/mentoring skills preferred.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver training experiences for Pre-Service Teachers
  • In consultation with other stakeholders, create and implement systems, processes, and policies for assessing and evaluating Pre-Service Teachers and coach/mentor performance, including mechanisms for formal and ongoing feedback, reflection, and goal setting.
  • Act as internal expert on teacher education, assessment, retention, teacher quality and teacher preparation, coaching and development.
  • Support key areas of program implementation, including communications, technology, training, school partnerships, and program evaluation.
  • Act as a strategic thought partner in the design and implementation of program curriculum for Pre-Service Teachers and coaches.
  • Communicate with TRQ leadership about ongoing successes and challenges and proactively recommend solutions.
  • Confer with school leadership on policy and programmatic matters, including building school investment in program and trouble-shooting challenges as necessary.
  • Create and sustain investment of coaches and Teaching Academies in the program and the Pre-Service Teachers’ success.
  • Visit Pre-Service Teacher/coach’s classrooms and oversee coaching and feedback to program staff and participants.
  • Knowledge of mastery-based learning, restorative justice practices, culturally sustaining practices, and Doug Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion strategies.
  • Excellent record of attendance, punctuality and professionalism
  • Willingness to work occasional Saturdays, school breaks, and evening hours to support the development and implementation of the Teaching Academy initiative
