Promoting Positive Behavior
The Promoting Positive Behavior for Students and Families at Home guidance is specific to the period of time in which students are engaged in remote learning due to COVID-19. The goal of the guidance provided in this document is to help parents and caregivers create a productive, safe, and healthy learning environment that is manageable for the student and the caregiver.
Get Ready to Learn at Home
The DOE has partnered with the Get Ready Project to support students with disabilities with a wide range of developmental and educational challenges during remote learning. For optimal learning to take place, students must have the opportunity to build connections between all of the systems in their bodies, and that for optimal teaching and caregiving, adults must have the same opportunity.
Families can access this daily yoga series through the Get Ready Project’s YouTube channel. New videos will be uploaded regularly and will build on previous sessions. The Get Ready Project is also providing a library of Ready Break free to families throughout remote learning.
Helping With Change of Routines
During this challenging time, your child may have some challenging behaviors because of the changes in routines or because they are feeling the adults’ anxieties. There are many strategies for supporting students through challenging behaviors, including:
- Create a routine and a visual schedule to make your child’s day more predictable
- Use timers to help your child understand the routine
- Use a 5-point scale to help your child explain his/her emotions
- Have a quiet space in your house for your child to de-escalate
- Make time throughout the day for movement
- Prepare your child for changes in routine ahead of time so s/he isn’t surprised
