The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is committed to ensuring that its programs, services, and activities are accessible to staff, members of the school community, students and family members with disabilities. The DOE assesses all of its buildings on a continuing basis to determine which schools are accessible to individuals with disabilities.
This page explains how to find out about the accessibility of school buildings, how to request reasonable accommodations for a disability, and how to find information about making a complaint regarding discrimination, including issues of accessibility and reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.
The DOE has a variety of school buildings, which include inaccessible buildings, partially accessible buildings, and fully accessible buildings. A fully accessible building is a building that is constructed post-1992, complies with all of the ADA’s design requirements, and has no barriers to access for persons with mobility impairments. In contrast, a partially accessible building allows persons with mobility impairments to enter and exit the building, access relevant programs, and have use of at least one restroom, but the entire building may not be accessible.

Accessible Schools are located in a fully or partially accessible building where an individual with mobility impairment may enter and access all relevant programs and services, including the science laboratory, library, cafeteria, and the gymnasium; in some cases school programs may need to be re-located to accommodate access. At least one restroom is accessible.
Download a citywide list of our accessible buildings. The list shows schools where all grades served are in accessible locations. If a Building Accessibility Profile exists, there will be a hyperlink available in the “Building Accessibility” column. Some of these schools are sited in multiple locations (e.g., a school may serve grades K - 2 in one building and grades 3 - 5 in another building). The list also indicates whether the school is located in a fully or partially accessible building, according to this scale:

Some schools are located in more than one building. Some grades are served in an accessible location and other grades are served in a building that is not. Admissions and Accessibility
Children living in New York City are eligible to participate in the admissions process for pre-K during the year they turn four, and for kindergarten during the year they turn five. Use the Find a School link below search for schools and each school’s accessibility status.
Most middle and high school students participate in middle school and high school choice admissions processes and should refer to the list of accessible schools to determine which schools are accessible. Accessibility designations are also noted in the Find a School results.
Any questions regarding admission to an accessible school should be directed to the local Family Welcome Center. All other questions regarding school accessibility should be directed to the Division of Space Management's Accessibility Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If a student who requires an accessible school receives an offer to a school that is not designated as accessible but his/her parent believes that a reasonable accommodation would allow the child to attend that school, the parent may contact the Division of Space Management's Accessibility Coordinator at email@example.com to make an accommodation request. If the student cannot be accommodated at that school, he or she may receive an updated placement by requesting a medical transfer or a reasonable accommodation through the Office of Student Enrollment.

If your zoned or neighborhood school is not accessible, but you believe that a reasonable accommodation would allow your child to attend that school, please contact the Division of Space Management's Accessibility Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org to make an accommodation request. Use Find a School to locate your zoned school:
Such accommodations may include structural changes to the school building, or non-structural accommodations, such as moving a classroom to the first floor, purchasing equipment, or providing a student with an aide. Your request will be reviewed and you will be notified of the status of your request within 15 days. In the event that your request is approved but the implementation of your child’s accommodation will require some time due to, for example, construction or purchase of equipment, you will be given the option of having your child assigned to an accessible school near your home in the interim.
If you are a parent, family member, or member of the school community who requires an accommodation to attend an event (i.e., parent-teacher conference, school performance, graduation) at a building that is not accessible, please contact the school’s principal to request an accommodation. If an accommodation cannot be provided at the school level, you may contact the Division of Space Management's Accessibility Coordinator at email@example.com, and your request will be reviewed.
Students with disabilities, including auditory or visual impairments, will be accommodated in accordance with their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or Section 504 plans. For any questions concerning having your child evaluated for an IEP please contact your local Committee on Special Education (CSE).
