The Month Ahead (February 2024)
Just when we were all getting used to "January"...
February 2024 is here, and with the arrival of the new month comes a new opportunity for us to see what's ahead for New York City Public Schools!
This month marks the start of the second half of the 2023–24 school year— and with everything coming up over the next several months, including enrollment application deadlines, the start of spring PSAL sports, college acceptance season, spring recess, and more, now's the perfect time to take a moment to plan ahead and consider your children's next steps!
Midwinter Recess (February 19–23) is the highlight of our citywide calendar this month, as all City public schools will be closed during that school week. Beyond that, City schools across the five boroughs are commemorating Black History Month throughout February, and many schools will be participating in this month's Climate Action Day (February 7) as well as our annual Respect for All Week (February 12–16).
And while this may not be reflected in our calendar this month, it's important to note that February is the last full month before 3-K and Pre-K applications close on Friday, March 1. So if you are planning to apply on your child's behalf for placement into the City's 3-K or Pre-K programs next fall, use February to prepare and submit your application before the March 1 deadline.
Now with all that said, here's what's in store for NYC Public Schools this month, courtesy of our official 2023–24 calendar.

Some notes about this month's schedule:
February is Black History Month
Throughout February, NYC Public Schools across the five boroughs are commemorating Black History Month, our annual national celebration of the achievements and milestones of Black people throughout U.S. history. Join us and our schools as we commemorate Black history all month long—check out our Black History Month webpage for an updated listing of events, exhibitions, places to visit, and books to read for students and families alike.
Climate Action Day on February 7
This year, NYC Public Schools are participating in four Climate Action Days, which are fun, themed creative learning opportunities for school communities to learn the importance of implementing sustainable, environmentally-responsible practices into their classrooms and neighborhoods. This month's Climate Action Day is themed around "Waste"—students will learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle in their classrooms, schools, and beyond.
Learn more about this month's Climate Action Day on our official webpage, and consider getting into the "Action Day" spirit by using our very own instructions to make a homemade birdhouse out of recycled materials!
Respect for All Week
From February 12–16, our schools are celebrating Respect for All (RFA) Week, our annual weeklong call to action for City schools to build, promote, and maintain safe and inclusionary school communities and environments.
Learn more about RFA Week, including National No One Eats Alone Day, by checking out our Respect for All webpage.
