Multilingual Learners

NYC Public Schools has more than 356,000 students who speak a language other than English at home. That's 44 percent of all students. About 1 in 5 students gets extra support to learn English through English Language Learner (ELL) services. We want every student to feel proud of their race, culture, and language, and to feel like they belong. Our goal is for every student to graduate multilingual and ready for success in college, a career, and life.

New York State Seal of Biliteracy: The NYSSB recognizes high school graduates who can listen, speak, read, and write in English and at least one other language. The NYSSB is available to any graduating senior who has met the requirements for a diploma and can show their skill in English and another language.
