Dr. Maddy Fox

I am the parent of two children in NYCPS, an organizer, a union member, and a participatory researcher. I am also an Associate Professor of Children and Youth Studies and Sociology at Brooklyn College and of Urban Education and Critical Psychology at the CUNY Graduate Center. In my work, I engage participatory action research (PAR) with young people and communities to investigate, interrogate, and impact public policy that intersects with young people’s lives. I am a founding researcher with the Public Science Project at the CUNY Graduate Center, a hub for critical participatory action research. I facilitated the District 15 PAR project, in which directly impacted community members led a “nothing about us, without us” approach to a school rezoning. I am honored to serve on the Panel for Educational Policy, and I hope to bring my interest and expertise in educational policy, research, and participatory commitments but also my willingness to listen, learn, and be moved. I approach this role with a deep belief in public education and a commitment to thinking carefully and critically about accountabilities, governance, and community power.
