A student is eligible for stop-to-school yellow bus service if:

  • The student is in grades K-6
  • The student lives in the same district as the school, (or the same borough for non-public, charter, or citywide gifted and talented schools)
  • There is already yellow bus service at the school
  • A current stop exists that can serve the student or a new stop can be created.

Student MetroCard is issued upon request if:

  • yellow bus service is not available or,
  • if a new stop cannot be added for the student.

Exceptions to Transportation Eligibility

Sometimes we make an exception for a student who would not ordinarily be eligible.

Parents and guardians, along with their child's school (and a physician in the case of a medical exception), must complete an exception request form related to the reason for the request. Ask your school's transportation coordinator for the form you need.

You can submit an exception request for the following reasons:

  • Medical
  • Hazard
  • Emergency
  • Temporary Housing
  • Distance Disagreement

Parents and school staff are encouraged to use OPT Customer Service number (718)392-8855 to report any service issues. When calling it would be helpful to have the students ID# and the respective Route#.

Specialized Transportation

Students who receive special education services may receive other transportation services. Visit the Specialized Transportation page below for more information.

Pre-K or Early Intervention Options

Children who are in special education, pre-K, or early intervention programs are eligible for curb-to-curb yellow bus service if their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) recommends special transportation. Because pre-K bus vendors work very closely with parents, we urge you to provide your vendor with your emergency contact information.
