What is advanced coursework?
Advanced coursework includes special classes that go beyond the regular school curriculum. These classes are designed to challenge students and help them get ahead. This notice applies to middle school, high school or college-level advanced coursework and is not a requirement for all schools that offer these programs or opportunities. Some examples include:
- Honors classes
- Accelerated classes where students can move faster through the material
- Advanced Placement (AP) classes
- International Baccalaureate (IB) programs
- Dual-enrollment classes where students can earn high school and college credit at the same time
- Courses that offer college credit or industry-related certifications
These opportunities are a great way for students to explore their interests, build college and career readiness, and grow their academic confidence. Taking advanced courses also prepares students for life after high school- whether in college, a career or other paths. To learn more about the advanced courses available at any NYCPS high school, visit the School Quality page and view the School Quality Snapshot.
All schools in New York State must notify students and their families every year about the availability of advanced coursework at their school by June 1.
