Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) is the result of a deep partnership between New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and CareerWise New York with the goal to create a career path for NYCPS students that layers paid work experience with post-secondary credits and industry credentials.
Participating schools integrate career readiness coursework into the school day for all 9th and 10th graders to create a foundational understanding of apprenticeships and their own personal career interests. During freshman and sophomore year of high school, students participate in workshops, courses, and various training sessions that prepare them to apply for apprenticeships. Students are given the opportunity to explore and discover diverse career paths in high-growth, high-wage fields.
During their junior year of high school, students apply for an apprenticeship. If accepted, they commit to a two- to three- year paid work experience, depending upon the occupational title. Once in an apprenticeship, students attend school in the mornings Monday through Thursday and all day Friday. They are at their place of work Monday through Thursday in the afternoons.
Apprenticeships are competency-based, which means that students are working to master a set of related skills necessary to pursue a next-level job in that field. Upon graduation from high school, students may receive credit for prior learning for their apprenticeship at post-secondary institutions where they can continue their education while completing their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are registered with the New York State Department of Labor and culminate in a credential of value in their respective industry.
By coupling apprenticeships with FutureReadyNYC, students enter employment after having completed pathway-aligned coursework and early college credits, making them more competitive applicants and more successful apprentices.
CRMYA builds career readiness skills for NYCPS students, creates meaningful career opportunities for apprentices, and builds learnings that can be applied in other schools to support development of career readiness skills.
