ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a current, full-time NYCPS educator (with at least one class of record; 40% of your time spent in the classroom)
  • Must be tenured as of the first day of the 2024-25 SY;
  • Must receive an Advance overall rating of "Highly Effective," "Effective," (or "Satisfactory," if applicable)

     

    SELECTION CRITERIA: 

  • Exemplary Teaching Practice, Skills, and Knowledge
    • Demonstrating proficient knowledge of content, curriculum, and standards in teaching area
    • Planning appropriate and rigorous instructional lessons for all students with a variety of needs and strengths using varied instructional methods
    • Systematically assesses student work to track student progress and inform exemplary instruction
    • Applies effective classroom management techniques to engage students and make efficient use of time
  • Demonstration of model teaching practice
    • Articulation of connections between instructional choices and student outcomes
    • Setting clear, measurable goals for your professional growth related to increasing student achievement
    • Identifies inequitable policies and practices through data and conversations with the school
    • community and disrupts them through advocacy, inclusion, and enduring structural change.
    • Demonstrating a reflective attitude regarding your practice
  • Informing and Influencing Teaching and Learning Initiatives
    • Aware of school-wide goals and values and integrating them into practice
    • Committing to expanding depth of professional knowledge and skill
  • Desire to enhance the collaborative culture of the  school community by working with colleagues and school leaders
  • Excellent record of attendance and punctuality

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    In addition to their duties as classroom teachers, the Model Teacher will have two (2) main responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a laboratory classroom, a space for ongoing professional learning that aligns to school-wide goals and serves as a resource for colleagues professional learning
  • To serve as a resource for colleagues to demonstrate practices aligned to the Danielson Framework for Teaching. The Model Teacher will utilize the laboratory classroom to support the professional growth of colleagues using strategies including, but not limited to:
    • Continuously exploring new and innovative instructional practices
    • Developing a strategic plan for the use of a laboratory classroom; including plans for the before, during and after each intervisitation
    • Aligning lessons to Danielson’s Framework for Teaching and model the use of Next Generation Learning Standards
    • Creating a welcoming and open environment for teacher reflection and growth

       

  • Support colleagues’ growth by creating transparency around their own professional and pedagogical practices, including the processes for reflecting on and adjusting their own practices to improve student learning. Supportive activities may include:
    • Reflecting on and debriefing lessons with colleagues, both sharing knowledge and modeling a collaborative environment
    • Demonstrating and articulating effective teaching practices, including instructional strategies, assessments, tools, and decisions
    • Fostering trusting and collaborative relationships with colleagues in order to encourage intervisitation

       

      SALARY:  

      Model Teachers receive additional compensation of $7,500 over and above applicable contracted annual salary for one year, contingent upon the selected candidate remaining in the position at the school through the 2024-2025SY.

      WORK SCHEDULE:

      As per NYCPS/UFT agreement, in addition to normal school hours, Model Teachers will:
      • Conduct Model Teacher responsibilities (listed above) for a minimum of two (2) hours per month outside the contractual workday, according to a schedule created by the Model Teacher and approved by the principal;
      • Work an additional two (2) days during the summer break, scheduled during the week preceding Labor Day, according to a schedule and plan set and approved by the superintendent. This includes both workdays at the Model Teacher’s school and participation in the Teacher Career Pathways Symposium (held during the week prior to Labor Day for teachers taking on the role prior to the first day of school and during the fall for teachers taking on the role after the first day of school);
  • Approximately 6 hours of training during the mandatory annual Teacher Career Pathways Symposium; and
  • Participate in approximately 10 hours of development activities periodically throughout the school year to support development in the role as a Model Teacher.

    Model Teacher duties will take the place of all other out-of-classroom “professional responsibilities” during the contractual professional period.

    QUALIFICATION PROCESS:

  • Eligible applicants must have qualified through the Teacher Career Pathways application and interview process by May 1, 2024. The application can be accessed at this link.
  • A NYCPS-UFT committee screens applications and, based on application review scores, applicants may be invited to a virtual interview. Interviews are facilitated and scored by a NYCPS-UFT committee to establish a pool of qualified teacher leaders.
  • Principals will make hiring selections of Model Teachers from the pool of qualified candidates (from their school, or externally hired, if done before the Open Market deadline) during Summer 2024.
  • Individuals in the pool selected by a principal are not obligated to accept an offer for a Model Teacher position.
  • Hired Model Teachers will take on the role for a term of one year, renewable for a second year, at the discretion of the principal.
  • After the second year of qualification, Model Teachers who have been selected and served in the role for at least one year will be invited to complete a requalification process to continue the Model Teacher qualification for an additional two years.
