POSITION:
School Social Worker – Central Crisis Support Team (Multiple Positions).
(ONE YEAR POSTION)
LOCATION:
Various locations throughout the 5 boroughs
ELIGIBILITY:
New York City Department of Education licensed School Social Worker (LMSW required/ LCSW preferred). For current Department of Education (DOE) employees, you must have a record of Satisfactory (S) ratings with reliable attendance and punctuality.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The DOE Office of Safety and Youth Development employs social workers to provide central support to New York City Schools. The central crisis social workers will provide direct crisis support to students and schools. Central Crisis Support Team social workers will work with school administration and school staff to determine need for professional learning to help build capacity in schools. Central Crisis Support Team social workers will identify and have access to additional resources outside of the school to provide directly to students, families, and school staff. In addition, School Social Workers will engage in and facilitate professional development workshops citywide.

Supervisor of School Social Workers
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide professional development to borough and wide groups of professionals on topics included but not limited to mental health, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, school safety, suspension prevention, grief and loss, domestic violence.
- Collaborate as needed with existing school teams to provide clinical individual and/or group support. Establish relationships with community providers. Build capacity with schools to help staff identify unmet basic physical, health and safety needs and develop and implement strategies to have those needs met.
- During a crisis meet with students, school community, and their families to provide short term crisis support.
- Keeps records of support provided on a daily basis.
- Collaborate with school counselors, school social workers, mental health providers, parent coordinators, and other student support staff to share resources and information.
- Attend professional development workshops and training, Conduct professional development workshops for DOE staff, as needed.
- Report to and maintain strong professional relationship with Supervisor of School Social Workers (including attendance at mandatory supervision sessions and all related paperwork).
- Provide reports, data, and updates concerning the initiative when required.
- Extensive citywide travel required.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
- Knowledge of citywide social-emotional learning and mental health initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability and knowledge of crisis intervention, de-escalation strategies and restorative practices.
- Working knowledge of the principles, practices and ethical standards of School Social Work; the relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
- Understanding of diversity and sensitivity to differences in cultures and family structures.
- Understanding of trauma and the effect trauma has on emotional and mental development of children.
- Understanding the effect of poverty on young people and risks factors.
- Understanding the complexities of grief and loss as well as having prior experience with supporting others during the bereavement process.
- Willingness to learn new skills and commitment to attend professional development activities.
- Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader and/or member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Knowledge about assessment, educational planning, transition services, and effective intervention strategies.
- Knowledge about community resources or other available services to assist students and their families in address problems affecting their social, emotional, physical and/or behavioral functioning.
- Experience working with or willingness to work with high-need and at-risk students and their families.
- Knowledge of DOE policies and procedures including Chancellor’s Regulations A-411 and A-755.
- Demonstrated success in initiating and maintaining open communications with students and families.
- Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with other professional staff.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates knowledge of video conferencing platforms as well as collaborating on shared documents in Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 (Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint, etc.).
WORK YEAR/HOURS:
As per collective bargaining agreement / 36 hours 40 minutes per week (exclusive of 30-minute lunch) which is 6 hours 50 minutes per day (exclusive of 30-minute lunch).
