POSITION:

Teacher Assigned – Inclusive and Adapted Physical Education Instructional Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Teaching students to take care of their minds and their bodies builds a foundation for lifelong learning and ensures they have the skills needed to be physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally healthy. The New York City Department of Education’s Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) supports school communities in building strong structures and rich environments where Health Education and Physical Education (PE) thrive, and guides schools in teaching nearly one million students what they need to know to make healthy, informed choices now and throughout their lives.

The Inclusive and Adapted Physical Education Instructional Specialist supports the Director of Physical Education in the development and dissemination of professional learning and resources that support schools citywide to provide developmentally appropriate physical education programs and learning experienced for students with disabilities. The specialist works directly with central offices, district and school administrators, physical education teachers, IEP team members, related service providers and support staff citywide to increase understandings and implementation of physical education requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 and NYSED regulations. Additional responsibilities include staying current with trends in instructional technology to support students with disabilities, deep understanding of New York City Department of Education’s special education policies and systems such as SESIS and IEP procedures as well as standardized assessments protocols in adapted physical education for students age 3-21.

ELIGIBILITY:

Certified and licensed, appointed and tenured New York City Department of Education

teachers with background and experience in Inclusive and/or Adapted Physical Education

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:       

  • Licensed and certified teacher of Physical Education
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Satisfactory (or Advance-equivalent) experience at the NYC Public Schools
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching Physical Education, including adapted physical education preferred.
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development for educators.
  • Deep understanding of New York State and National Physical Education Standards and NYC PE Scope and Sequences.
  • Deep knowledge of disability classifications under IDEA and strategies for instructing students with disabilities.
  • Experience assessing students using the Test of Gross Motor Development 3, NYC FITNESSGRAM and the Brockport Fitness Test.
  • Commitment to increasing understanding of inclusive practices in physical education programs at all grade levels.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
  • Strong teamwork ethic and desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative office.
  • Ability to prioritize, work independently, handle many responsibilities simultaneously, and provide ongoing follow-up.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT).
  • Experience with a variety of technology platforms to support accessibility a plus.

 

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

Professional Learning and Instructional Resource Development

  • Design and deliver professional development and guidance to Physical Education teachers and IEP team members to support inclusive and adapted Physical Education through in-person and online training.
  • Stay up to date with policies and systems such as SESIS and IEP procedures to support the delivery of appropriate Adapted Physical Education programs.
  • Disseminate policies and instructional requirements under IDEA and Section 504.
  • Facilitate Adapted PE Teacher Connection sessions for itinerant physical education teachers to share resources and recommended practices.
  • Review research and resource materials to stay up to date with current trends in special education and physical education including Universal Design for Learning and technology to support learning.

     

    Students Assessment and IEP Team Support

  • Conduct student assessments for adapted physical education utilizing standardized assessment tools.
  • Consults with PE teachers and school psychologists to use assessment results appropriately.
  • Support IEP teams to develop appropriate physical education instructional programs in the least restrictive environment for students mandated for Adapted Physical Education.
  • Support IEP teams with understanding the components of Adapted PE included in the IEP such as PLOP development using assessment and anecdotal data, goal development and progress monitoring.
  • Review new assessment materials as they become available.

 

Capacity Building

  • Work with the Director of Physical Education to support training central and district special education staff such as school psychologists, related service providers and other IEP team members.

 

SALARY:  

As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

 

HOURS / WORK YEAR:

As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement

9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.

School year plus five additional days during winter, spring or summer vacation period.
