Chancellor Carranza Launches Parent University, New Online Resource for Families

  • Posted: Tue Nov 24, 2020

NEW YORK – Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza today launched Parent University, a new online platform that offers a centralized catalog of courses, live events, and activities to help connect with families and support students. The platforms offers all New York City parents and guardians access to live and on-demand courses and resources across multiple discipline areas and grade bands.

“Our families have been so resilient this past year, and through Parent University we’re finding more ways to empower parents and guardians as partners,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “We know our families are busier than ever, and this platform is designed to meet parents where they are, whether that’s pre-recorded courses, or live virtual events. We’ll continue to add resources that support, engage, and educate our families throughout the year.”

The DOE’s Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) team, in partnership with the Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT), worked collaboratively to design and operationalize Parent University. Along with tailored resources and courses, it also provides another way for DOE and community partners to share important news, updates, and information with families. Courses are available in multiple languages and we’re working to expand the amount of multilingual offerings.

“Parent empowerment is at the center of everything we do and this is another tool to help us lift up the roles of families for the benefit of our students,” said Acting Deputy Chancellor of Community Empowerment, Partnerships, and Communications, Adrienne Austin. “In these unprecedented times, it’s so important that we get creative and find ways to reach every household and strengthen our communities.”

All families, from early childhood to adult education, can create a free account and register for workshops, attend an event, find a training and more. There are currently 95+ courses offered and they cover a wide range of topics including:

  • Remote Learning and Technology
  • Health and Wellness
  • Special Education
  • Multilingual Learners
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Parent Leadership
