Like flowers, opportunities for students are in full bloom in this month.
Throughout May, several local partners and organizations are seeking City students for scholarships, free coding courses, and networking opportunities. Thanks to institutions like the New-York Historical Society, the Cooper Union, and Columbia University, as well as organizations like Urban Arts, students throughout the City can explore their interests, get answers to long-simmering questions, develop key networks, and even create a video game (or two!).

Learn How to Create and Design Video Games through Urban Arts' Game Design and Development Program
For students who will be in grades 10–12 by fall 2024
Runs July 8–August 16, Monday through Friday, 10AM–5PM

Urban Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching game design as a pathway to successful college and careers, is offering students who will be in grades 10–12 in fall 2024 the chance to apply for admission to their free Game Design and Development Program this summer. Through this program, participating students will be able to learn to code games in C# using the Unity 3D engine, work with fun, experienced instructors who will help students build their own software, play games and connect with fellow gamers, and gain access to future supports, including college admissions, scholarship access mentorships, and more.

Prepare for Careers in Medicine and STEM This Summer Through S-PREP
For students in grades 7–12

Columbia University's State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparatory program designed for students in grades 7–12 who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or in related STEM fields. Courses include, but are not limited to anatomy, biochemistry, organic chemistry, brain and cognitive science, pre-med, physics, psychology, algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, and statistics. In addition, students admitted to S-PREP are eligible to apply for summer research programs for high school students that are run by the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Register and Attend the New York Hall of Science's STEM Career Expo
For high school, college, and trade school students; chaperones required for students under 16 years of age

Create a Game Based on History at the New-York Historical Society
For NYC students who will be in grades 10–12 by fall 2024; spring 2024 high school grads also welcome

Ever wanted to create a digital game that's based on history? Through the New-York Historical Society's (N-YHS) Tech Scholars: Game Design program, rising high school students currently in grades 9–12 are invited to research, conceptualize, and create their own 2D game rooted in history and inspired by the N-YHS' collections.
Participants must commit to attending all five days of the program, which will run July 15–19, and the program will take place in person at the New-York Historical Society in Manhattan. Learn What It Takes to be a Sustainable Entrepreneur through the Summer Global Leaders Academy
For NYC English language learners and multilingual learners currently in high school
Summer session begins July 8; runs Monday–Thursday, 9AM–1PM at Teach for America HQ in Manhattan

Thanks to a partnership between NYC Public Schools' Division of Multilingual Learners and various major national and international organizations, including Permanent Missions to the United Nations, NYC students can apply to be a part of the Global Leaders Academy, a six-week summer program designed to expose young change makers who are English language learners and immigrant students to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The program will also help participating students develop their language, leadership, and other critical skills, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Students who complete the program will receive a $550 stipend, and lunch will be served daily throughout the course of the academy.

Get Introduced to Architecture through the Cooper Union's Online Summer Program
For students currently in grades 10–12
Online sessions run July 8–August 9, Monday–Thursday, 9PM–4PM
Cost: $2,980, with a $40 application fee. Scholarships/aid not available.

Deadline to Apply: June 1, 2024 (early applications are encouraged!)
The Cooper Union's Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture is offering a five-week summer intensive program designed to familiarize high school students with architectural thinking and design while developing a portfolio of completed projects. The program, which takes places online, includes lectures, workshops, and tutorials by Cooper faculty. Students will receive instruction in various tools and media, including digital drawing and model-making techniques, analysis and representation, computer modeling and fabrication.
Students interested in this program will need to complete an application. Note that this program is evaluating and accepting applicants on a competitive rolling basis as space allows—so applying as early as possible is encouraged. Also, please note that students accepted into this program are required to have access to a PC or a Macintosh computer for the duration of the program.

Apply for the NYS Healthcare Workers for Our Future Scholarship and Get Two Years of College/University Education Covered
For New York State residents enrolled at least part-time in a approved degree-granting program by fall 2026
Scholarship runs for up to two years of full-time study

New York State's Healthcare Workers for Our Future Scholarship provides two-year scholarships to students pursuing college degrees in select healthcare professions at approved New York State-based colleges or universities. The scholarships, which cover tuition, room, board, and other related expenses for two years of full-time attendance on behalf of 500 selected recipients, can cover the cost of pursuing of Associate and Bachelor's degrees equal to the average cost of full-time attendance at SUNY institutions.
