Winter's almost here, but student opportunities are only just starting to heat up!

This November, New York City students have quite a few learning opportunities and programs, including paid internships, scholarships, and free workshops that are fun, fulfilling, and helpful when it comes to establishing future career paths. Thanks to organizations and institutions like the New York Public Library, New York University, and the New York Hall of Science, City students can obtain new skills and meet with industry insiders and like-minded peers that can inspire, teach, and even reveal career paths they may have never previously considered!

Check out the following list of opportunities available to City students throughout November and into the winter season!

Opportunities for Students in November 2024

The opportunities listed below are ordered by their submission/registration deadline dates, with the most urgent deadlines listed first. For more information about any of these listings, please click through the corresponding links embedded in each entry. 

 

Register for NYU's College & Career Lab (CCL) Fall Info Session

For students in grades 7 and 8
Session runs on November 13, 6:30–7:30 P.M.

Event: November 13, 2024

New York University's College & Career Lab (CCL) provides City middle school students with the opportunity to explore various academic pathways and "try on" careers throughout middle and high school for free. Participating students join college-style lectures and intensive workshops led by NYU faculty on topics such as neuroscience and philosophy. 

On November 13, NYU will host an information session where CCL representatives will provide an overview of the program, review the application process, and answer questions. To learn more about CCL, register to attend the CCL info session directly on NYU's CCL Info Session registration page. 

Note that the 2025 CCL program itself will begin in summer 2025; applications for the program will be due March 31, 2025.

 

Learn About the Future of Aviation and Aerospace Through NYSCI's Virtual Event

For students in grades 9–12
Event takes place November 14, 6–7 P.M., on Zoom

Registration Deadline: November 14, 2024

The New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) is offering high school students the chance to participate in a free virtual panel, "Beyond the Sky: The Future of Aviation and Aerospace Science," where they can learn about the latest innovations in aviation and aerospace science from an outstanding group of engaging industrial experts—this event is great for students interested in space exploration, aviation, journalism, and engineering research!

Become a NewMu Teen at the New Museum

For students aged 15–19 years
Program runs every Monday, 4–6 P.M., January 13–May 26, 2025 (excluding school recess days)

Application Deadline: November 17, 2024

Through this free five-month afterschool program, NewMu Teens offers students, 15–19 years old, with the opportunity to interact with contemporary art and culture while getting paid a $500 stipend! The program focuses on the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexual orientation, and participating students will be able to connect with peers and guest artists through workshops, art creation, and discussion.

The program meets every Monday after school hours, excluding school holidays, beginning January 13, 2025, at 250 Bowery in Manhattan. To learn more, check out the New Museum's program webpage, and apply online by November 17.

 

Discover New York City's Great Outdoors through the Urban Park Rangers

For students of all ages
Events run through January 2025
Cost: Free

Registration Deadlines Vary

Since 1979, NYC Parks' Urban Park Rangers have helped New Yorkers and visitors of all ages discover and explore the City's natural world through environmental education, outdoor recreation, wildlife management, and active conservation.

Become a Teen Civics Ambassador and Get Paid to Create Fun Events and Resources for Other Teens

For City students in grades 10–12
Jobs run eight hours per week; students under 18 need employment certification for minors

Application Deadline: December 2, 2024

The New York Public Library's Teen Civics Ambassadors program offers New York City high school students in grades 10–12 with the chance be a part of internships that can help develop their job readiness and leadership skills. Teen Civics Ambassadors create fun and exciting events and resources for other teens, engage their peers in civic and community duties, attend trainings and other special opportunities, and get paid ($16 per hour) for their time!

NYC Parks' Urban Park Rangers provide students of all ages with the chance toi explore the natural wonders of New York City's parks. Rangers may even help you pick up new skills, such as woodworking or fishing! Visit NYC Parks' Urban Park Rangers webpage to learn more!

 

Craft Your First (or Next) Play through the Lucille Lortel Theatre's High School Playwriting Fellowship

For students in grades 9–12
Workshops take place on select Thursdays and Saturdays, January–March 2025; see program page for details

Application Deadline: December 3, 2024

The Lucille Lortel Theatre's 2025 High School Playwriting Fellowship provides seven NYC public school students with the opportunity to write and publish a play while being mentored by theatre professionals across 12 workshops taking place in January through March 2025. Fellows will also receive a $500 stipend, a professional staged reading of their plays, a certificate of recognition, and a night out on Broadway with dinner and tickets to a show!

To be considered for the program, students must submit an artistic statement (500 words or less), a creative writing sample (1–3 pages long), and three different story ideas (each should be 3–5 sentences long).

Become a Pathfinder Intern and Gain Computer Science Work Experience

For students in grades 9–12
Internship runs March–June 2025

Application Deadline: December 27, 2024 

Through NYC Public Schools' CS4All Pathfinders Internship Program, City high school students can gain their first computer science-related workplace experiences. The four-month internship runs for 70 hours from March through June 2025; participating students will complete 60 hours of paid ($16.50 per hour), hands-on industry work experience at host sites, plus an additional 10 hours of mandatory, unpaid work readiness and career preparation training.

Win Money for College through the Mas Family Scholarship Fund

For students of Cuban descent in grades 9–12
Winners announced in April 2025

Since 1996, the Mas Family has offered talented Cuban and Cuban-American high school students with college scholarships. Eligible students must have a 3.5 GPA or higher, be Cuban or of direct Cuban descent, demonstrate leadership and community involvement, and have financial need.

Share Your Best Climate Action Ideas through the Battelle Climate Challenge

For students in grades 9–12
Grand prize winner travels to Washington D.C. in April 2025

Entry Deadline: February 7, 2025

Win money for your school through the Battelle Climate Challenge! 

Open to City high school students (grades 9–12), the Challenge asks participating students to research past and future impacts of climate-related hazards that are affecting their communities (ex. droughts, wildfires, and flooding), and then propose actions that can help build more resilient communities.

Students can win up to a $5,000 grant for a public school, public library, or nonprofit organization of their choice; the student who wins the $5,000 Grand Prize will present their solutions in-person at the 2025 Innovations in Climate Resilience Conference in Washington D.C.

Become an NYC Parks Lifeguard

For swimmers aged 16 or older
Candidates must pass qualifying test before Lifeguard Training begins 

Must Pass Qualifying Test by March 16, 2025

Are you ready to rise to the challenge and help keep New Yorkers safe by keeping a close watch on our pools and beaches next summer?

Consider becoming an NYC Parks Lifeguard!

Qualified candidates are placed into NYC Parks' Lifeguard Training program, where you'll strengthen your swimming technique and endurance, learn crucial lifesaving techniques, and receive certification to become an NYC Parks Lifeguard. Candidates who successfully complete the training program will then be offered full-time positions at City beaches and pools this summer.
