STATE OF OUR SCHOOLS

Dear NYC Public Schools Community,
The new school year is a time for possibility and promise. As an educator for nearly two decades, a New York City Public Schools parent, and the Chancellor of the largest school system in the nation, I feel that sense of promise profoundly.
I also feel a deep sense of responsibility. There is still so much we can—and must—do to provide the opportunities and experiences our students deserve. That’s why we are releasing this accountability tool, to share what we’ve accomplished so far and what we plan to achieve. We want our community to have a clear line of sight into our work and to hold us to our word.
Report Updates Timeline
This report will be a dynamic, living document, one we’ll update throughout the year to share our progress and keep you informed. Check this website every few months to see the progress we’ve made.
Ensuring Safety and Promoting Wellness
My first of three commitments is to ensure student safety and promote wellness—because our children can only learn when they feel safe, welcomed, and supported in school. To make good on this commitment, we are implementing or expanding numerous initiatives that support both physical and emotional safety. Here is a snapshot of our progress:
Strengthening Comprehensive Teacher Supports
My second commitment is to support our educators. Having been a teacher and a principal myself, I know that for educators to thrive in their classrooms, ongoing, high-quality coaching and professional development are critical. As we have transformed our reading and math curricula to align with research on how kids learn, we have also delivered extensive, personalized training for our educators. Here is a snapshot of our progress as we launch and expand multiple initiatives focused on educator support:
Fostering Genuine and Impactful Family and Community Empowerment
My third commitment is to empower our families and communities. Families are essential partners in any school community. To that end, we are working to ensure schools are listening and responding to parents’ concerns, involving families more closely in their children’s school experiences, and offering opportunities for parents to learn and lead. There are so many ways we are embracing and empowering our families; view a snapshot of our progress here:
