Position:
Teacher Assigned – ELA Implementation Specialist, Elementary Schools
Office of School Leadership
(One-Year Position – Option to Reapply – Commences September 2025)
(For Internal and External Candidates)
Location:
Districts 5, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 29, 30, 32, 75 (Citywide). Assignment by District
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must possess a valid New York State teaching certificate and a New York City license in one of the following areas. Tenure is preferred:
- Early Childhood Education (Birth–Grade 2)
- Childhood Education (Common Branch) (Grades 1–6)
- Literacy (Birth–Grade 6)
- Students with Disabilities (Birth–Grade 2)
- Students with Disabilities (Grades 1–6)
- Students with Disabilities (K–12)
- English to Speakers of Other Languages (All Grades), including bilingual
- Speech and Language Disabilities (All Grades)
Selection Criteria:
- At least eight years of successful teaching experience, with significant experience in elementary school ELA
- A minimum of three consecutive years of Satisfactory, Effective, or Highly Effective ratings
- Strong knowledge of teacher development
- Demonstrated understanding of reading and writing acquisition and development
- Proven experience and expertise in implementing standards-based ELA curricula
- Demonstrated success collaborating with colleagues on early reading/writing instruction, curriculum, and assessment
- Ability to take initiative in challenging situations and deliver positive outcomes
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Preferred:
- Experience as a Literacy Coach
- Knowledge of research-based ELA instruction, differentiated strategies for multilingual learners and students with disabilities, and data-informed decision-making
- Familiarity with HMH Into Reading, Expeditionary Learning, and Wit & Wisdom
- Understanding of NYCPS, state, and national ELA standards and curriculum frameworks
- Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate instructional research and best practices
- Experience leading professional development, in-class coaching, and collaborative planning
- Ability to present instructional data clearly to guide practice and demonstrate impact
Duties/Responsibilities:
- The ELA Implementation Specialist supports school teams in implementing NYCPS-aligned ELA curricula through professional learning, coaching, and collaboration.
- Conduct ELA needs assessments in assigned schools for the 2025–2026 school year
- Support teachers, teams, and leaders across districts in alignment with NYCPS’s literacy framework
- Collaborate with central, district, and school leadership to develop ELA goals and action plans
- Facilitate ELA-focused professional learning sessions and curriculum implementation coaching
- Share best practices in ELA instruction and assessment aligned to NYCPS initiatives
- Engage schools in analyzing ELA data, student work, and instructional plans
- Monitor the impact of implementation using both qualitative and quantitative data
- Develop individualized implementation plans for each school to build capacity and sustainability
- Promote a shared understanding of promising ELA practices through intervisitations and shared learning
- Use implementation tools and resources provided with supervisor support
- Maintain documentation of support activities and instructional outcomes
- Collaborate with fellow ELA specialists to refine strategies and reflect on practice
- Establish and review personal implementation goals with supervisor
- Participate in NYCPS professional learning and team meetings
- Attend summer training to deepen curriculum and content expertise in ELA
Hours:
As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Work Year:
School Year (September 5, 2025 – June 30, 2026), plus five additional days during winter, spring, or summer recess as determined by supervisor
