Sharp will oversee management of the Chancellor’s Executive Office and serve as key advisor

NEW YORK – Chancellor Richard A. Carranza today announced the appointment of Edie Sharp as Chief of Staff. Sharp began at the DOE in 2016, serving as Deputy Chief of Staff to former Chancellor Fariña.

As Chief of Staff, Sharp will manage day-to-day operations within the Chancellor’s executive office, develop and implement the goals and objectives of the DOE, and serve as a key policy advisor to the Chancellor. Sharp will also serve as chief liaison to City Hall.

“Edie has been a critical member of my transition team and ensured I was prepared to hit the ground running on day one,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “Her years of experience in New York City government and public service demonstrate her commitment to the future of our City and students, and her work ethic and passion serve as a model for all her colleagues. I know that she will be a tireless and fierce advocate for our public schools as we work to deliver equity and excellence for every student.”

“I know firsthand the impact that a high-quality education can have and I’m dedicated to supporting Chancellor Carranza in providing students with the greatest opportunity possible to succeed now and in the future,” said Edie Sharp, Chief of Staff. “I’m looking forward to working alongside my colleagues at the DOE as we further the progress we have made and prepare to take on the exciting work ahead of us.”

Prior to her role as Deputy Chief of Staff, Sharp was a Senior Policy Advisor to First Deputy Mayor Anthony Shorris, serving as a policy analyst and project manager with a focus on the Department of Education, Office of Labor Relations, and City University of New York. She previously worked as a Special Assistant at City Hall and as a Senior Policy Associate under then-Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. Before joining the Office of the Public Advocate, she worked as a field researcher in Uganda, where she partnered with community leaders to support the development of local affordable housing. A graduate of Evergreen State College, Sharp also earned a Master’s from The New School in International Affairs, with a focus on Development Economics and Public Policy.

Edie Sharp succeeds Ursulina Ramirez as Chief of Staff. Ramirez, formerly Chief of Staff and Chief Operating Officer, will continue in her role as DOE Chief Operating Officer, where she manages the day-to-day operations of the DOE and oversees the development and implementation of key DOE portfolios, including the Mayor’s Equity and Excellence agenda.
