Students, parents, and staff members can complete survey until April 3
NEW YORK – Chancellor Richard A. Carranza today announced the launch of the 13th annual NYC School Survey, available online and in print in ten languages for students, parents, and staff members to complete by April 3. One of the nation’s largest annual surveys, the NYC School Survey gathers feedback aligned to the research-based Framework for Great Schools from all members of school communities.
“The NYC School Survey is a vital tool for us to hear directly from students, families and staff members about what they think is working and how we can improve in each and every one of our schools,” said Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza. “I encourage our communities to complete the survey by April 3 so we can incorporate your feedback and continue our progress towards equity and excellence across our school system.”
Last year, a record 1,014,400 students, parents and staff members participated. It was the second consecutive year that over half a million parents participated in the survey, and the third consecutive year that participation exceeded one million responses.
The NYC School Survey is designed in partnership with the Research Alliance for NYC Schools, and provides actionable information on school capacity that is aligned to the DOE’s research-based Framework for Great Schools. The survey collects information about a school’s capacity across six essential elements – Rigorous Instruction, Supportive Environment, Collaborative Teachers, Effective School Leadership, Strong Family-Community Ties, and Trust – that drive student achievement. Research has demonstrated that schools strong on the elements of the Framework are more likely to produce gains in attendance and student achievement.
“Our collaboration with the district on the Framework for Great Schools is a powerful example of research informing policy and practice,” said James Kemple, Executive Director of the Research Alliance for NYC Schools. “The Survey collects information about school characteristics and capacities that studies suggest are important for effective teaching and learning. We look forward to continuing our work together and urge teachers, students and parents to complete the Survey, so their perspectives are represented in the results.”
Starting this week, families will receive a paper survey that will be backpacked home and distributed at school events. Parents may also choose to submit their feedback online at NYCSchoolSurvey.org. If parents do not have their paper survey form, they can use the code lookup tool on the survey login page to receive their unique access code and complete the survey. Students in grades 6 through 12 will receive and complete their surveys in school, either on paper or online, while school staff will take the survey online. All survey responses are due by April 3.
The parent and student surveys are available both on paper and online at NYCSchoolSurvey.org in 10 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu.
Results from the survey are included in each school’s School Quality Snapshot and School Quality Guide. The Snapshot is designed to give families a picture of the quality of each school available, and the Guide provides more detailed information and data. Both are now available as searchable web-based, mobile-ready tools.
