NEW YORK – New York City Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos today announced the results of the 2025 Community and Citywide Education Council Elections, marking another significant milestone in the city’s ongoing commitment to elevating family voices. This year’s elections filled seats across 36 Community and Citywide Education Councils, reinforcing the vital role parents serve as partners in civic engagement.  The results can be viewed online here.

“Our schools continue to thrive because of committed parent leadership” said Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos. “The CCEC elections show just how deeply we value parent voices to shape our schools and build a stronger, more inclusive system for all our students. We are committed to giving our elected parent leaders the support and tools they need to lead effectively.”

“I am thrilled to congratulate the newly elected members of the 2025 Community and Citywide Education Councils,” said Deputy Chancellor for Family, Community, and Student Empowerment, Dr. Cristina Meléndez. “These parent leaders represent the heart of our public school system—families who are deeply committed to the success of their children and their communities. Community and Citywide Education Councils are platforms for true partnership between families and schools, rooted in collaboration and shared responsibility. When families have a seat at the table, they bring invaluable insights that help shape policies, strengthen school communities, and improve outcomes for all students. I look forward to working alongside our CCEC leaders as we continue building a system that honors family voice, centers student achievement, and ensures every child has the opportunity to thrive.”

During this year’s Education Council Elections, a total of 1,368 applications were received, a notable 24 percent increase from 2023, signaling growing interest in parent leadership. Districts 2, 6, 10, 13, 14 and 15 saw more than double the number of applicants in their respective districts this year, up from 2023.  This continued engagement reveals increased and successful efforts from NYCPS’ Division of Family, Community, and Student Empowerment, which has driven awareness and participation through targeted community events and informative sessions.

All newly elected CEC members will go through orientation and training early this summer.

There are 32 Community Education Councils (CECs) and four City Councils across New York City Public Schools. The councils play a critical role in addressing matters within each school to ensure students' best interests are prioritized. With parents serving as the primary advocates for their children, the councils play a direct role in shaping decisions that impact educational quality, equity, and student achievement across their communities. All elected parents are entrusted with key responsibilities, including advising policy, approving school zoning lines, and guiding other critical aspects throughout the school system.
