The Month Ahead (January 2024)
Alright, where did 2023 go?
As we all recover from the holiday season last month and get used to writing "2024," let's take a moment to look ahead and see what's in store this month for New York City Public Schools!
City families with young children should be on the lookout for two big enrollment-related dates this month; January 10 marks the start of our 2024 3-K and Pre-K application periods for fall 2024 admissions. Then on January 19, the 2024 Kindergarten and Kindergarten Gifted and Talented application will close.
Other events of note this month include our annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, New York State's administration of the 2024 January Regents exams, and the official start of the spring semester for City schools.

Wednesday, January 10, 2024 | 2024 3-K and Pre-K Applications Open Families who are interested in placing their children in NYC's 3-K and Pre-K programs in fall 2024 can begin completing and submitting their applications. These applications will close on Friday, March 1, 2024. |
Monday, January 15, 2024 | Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day All school and DOE offices are closed. |
Friday, January 19, 2024 | Last Day to Submit Applications for 2024 Kindergarten and Kindergarten G&T Admissions For families with children born in 2019 who are seeking kindergarten seats in NYC Public Schools in fall 2024 Last Day to Nominate Educators for the 2024 Big Apple Awards |
Tuesday, January 23–Friday, January 26, 2024 | New York State's January 2024 Regents Examinations Participating students should speak with their counselors to learn more about these exams. |
Monday, January 29, 2024 | Professional Development Day for NYC Public Schools High School Staff Members Students in high schools (grades 9–12) and 6–12 programs do not attend class. All other students should attend school. |
Tuesday, January 30, 2024 | Spring Semester Begins |
Wednesday, January 31, 2024 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. | Monthly Meeting of the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) Will take place at the William H. Taft Educational Campus. |
Some notes about this month's schedule:
2024 3-K and Pre-K Admissions
Beginning January 10, 2024, families interested in applying for fall 2024 admission to NYC's 3-K and Pre-K programs can complete and submit their applications on MySchools.
Children born in 2021 are eligible to apply for City 3-K programs, while children born in 2020 can be considered for placement into the City's Pre-K programs.

Kindergarten and Kindergarten G&T Admissions
Families with children who will turn five years old in 2024 can apply for fall 2024 admissions to kindergarten programs across the five boroughs, including Gifted & Talented (G&T) programs, until January 19, 2024.

Nominations for the 2024 Big Apple Awards
Take a moment to recognize and celebrate New York City's outstanding teachers!
The 2024 Big Apple Award nomination period is now open—students, families, administrators, and community members can nominate any DOE teacher for a Big Apple Award until January 19, 2024.

January 2024 NYS Regents Exams
From January 23 through January 26, 2024, the New York State Education Department will administer this year's first Regents Examinations to New York State students.
Students in NYC Public Schools should verify whether they are scheduled or required to take Regents exams in January 2024 by speaking with their teachers or counselors. Likewise, if a student would like to take a Regents exam this January, they should speak with their counselor.
January Regents exams will be held in the following subject areas:
- English Language Arts
- Living Environment
- Geometry
- U.S. History and Government
- Algebra I
- Physical Setting/Physics
- Global History and Geography II
- Algebra II
- Physical Setting/Chemistry
- Physical Setting/Earth Science
