Previewing the Year Ahead (2024–25 School Year)
We hope your summer was full of wonderful moments and memories!
With September 2024 and the official start of the 2024–2025 school year here, now is about as good a time as any for us to see what's in store for New York City public school students and families throughout the upcoming school year!
Beginning with the first day of school on September 5, NYC Public Schools will kick off the school year with a few changes and improvements both inside and outside the classroom, including the phase-in of our new NYC Solves curriculum initiative into City high schools and select middle school districts, as well as the second year of our ongoing NYC Reads literacy initiative for elementary schools. This year also marks the introduction of Student OMNY Cards to City students—goodbye, MetroCard "swipes," and hello "taps!" And later this year, for the first time ever, City schools will close in celebration of Diwali.
There's a lot more happening in NYC Public Schools beginning this fall—take a look at some of the most notable dates from our official 2024–25 school calendar, and start finalizing your plans for the school year!

A Few Things to Note for the 2024–25 School Year
Parent-Teacher Conferences Begin in September
This year's first round of Parent-Teacher Conferences will kick off on Thursday, September 12 for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers, and will continue on throughout the month (September 19 and 26) for middle schools, high schools, District 75 programs, 6–12 schools, and K–12 schools. Check out our official 2024–25 Schools Calendar for more information about this year's conferences, and visit our official Parent-Teacher Conferences page for meeting tips and policy information.
OMNY Card Replacing MetroCards in 2024–25
Beginning in September, City schools will begin distributing Student OMNY Cards to all students who are eligible to receive Student MetroCards. Student OMNY Cards are a huge improvement over Student MetroCards, as they provide City students with up to four free rides a day on MTA subways and buses, all day long, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. For more information about Student OMNY Cards, visit our "Student OMNY Cards" webpage.
Ensure Your Child Meets School Immunization Requirements for the 2024–25 School Year
All students enrolled in NYC schools, child care through grade 12, must meet New York State and New York City's school immunization requirements in order to attend school. Review your child's vaccine needs (based on their grade level) this school year by reviewing the information posted on our official Immunizations webpage.
Remember: a healthy school setting gives all students the best chance to learn and grow, and vaccines are among the best tools we have to protect children from spreading diseases that can make them very sick. Talk to your child's health provider to learn more.
Discount Codes Available for NYC Ferry Riders in 2024–25
NYC Ferry provides New Yorkers with an alternative and economical way to travel through the City. This year, for the first time ever, families with students in grades 9–12 can request discount codes that can be used to purchase NYC Ferry tickets. To obtain a discount code, log directly into your student's NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) and head over to the "Transportation" tile to request a discount code. Once requested, NYCSA will display a code that students can use to purchase discounted ferry tickets throughout the 2024–25 school year.
Speak with staff members at your child's school at the start of the school year if you have any questions.
College and Career Planning Checklist Now Available in NYCSA
Another upgrade to students' NYC Schools Accounts is the ability for City high school students and their families to answer questions regarding their college and/or career plans after high school. Questions will be tailored for each student, and are differentiated based on each student's age or eligibility for special services.
Families with students in grades 9–12 can log into NYCSA beginning August 1, 2024, to begin using these checklists to foster conversations about life after high school and help students make informed decisions about their future plans.

We hope you all have a successful start to the new school year—on behalf of NYC Public Schools, we wish you all a spectacular end to your summer break!
