Spring for New Courses This Season on Parent University

With springtime looming around the corner, expect milder temperatures, seasonal allergies, and new courses on Parent University!

This spring, Parent University, New York City's free online learning and empowerment platform for New York City Public School families, is partnering with the New York City Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) to provide free live online classes focused on housing needs and concerns, including tenant rights and home ownership, that are shared by many families across the five boroughs.

Anyone with a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA) can access Parent University—once registered, parents, other family members and caregivers can register for everything Parent University offers, including live events and training sessions. Courses are even available to families in an ever-growing number of languages, ensuring that more and more of our families will have access to these online lessons over time.

Please note that all evening classes will have interpretation available in Spanish, Mandarin, and Bangla.

Tenant Classes

To learn about tenant rights and protections, clear up misconceptions, and better understand tenant and landlord responsibilities, check out these courses. Prior to registering, request your rent history at portal.hcr.ny.gov/app/ask to find the class most suitable to your needs.

Rent Stabilized & Rent Control Tenants: Know Your Rights

Current tenants in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized apartments in NYC can learn about the powerful laws that protect them from unlawful evictions, poor housing quality, and keep families housed.

Tenants: Know Your Rights – Market Rate Apartments and Good Cause Protections

Current tenants in market-rate or unregulated rentals can learn about important existing protections, including laws preventing unlawful evictions and the Housing Maintenance Code, as well as the recently enacted Good Cause Eviction Law, which further adds protections for some tenants.

Rental Housing Discrimination and Harassment

Tenants, landlords, and realtors can learn about how the NYC Human Rights Law protects individuals based on age, ethnicity, disability, and income.

Owning a Home in NYC

Homeowners can learn the basics of owning a home in New York City, including the roles of key City agencies and what they require.

Department of Buildings: Rules, Permits, Summons, and More

Homeowners, property owners, and property managers can learn how to navigate the NYC Department of Buildings’ online resources including DOB NOW, Building Permits, Certificate of Occupancy (COB), and the Building Information System (BIS). Owners with existing “open” OATH summonses issued by a DOB Inspector can also learn how to resolve these.

Lead-Based Paint

Homeowners, property owners, and tenants of homes built before 1978 should learn about the dangers of lead paint and how to identify and safely remediate lead-based paint hazards.
