Celebrate World Read Aloud Day 2026 with New York City Libraries

World Read Aloud Day is Wednesday, February 4!

Did you know that research shows reading aloud builds powerful neural pathways that contribute to both emotional wellbeing and academic growth? Reading aloud is a key that unlocks a lifetime of connection, happiness, and success for children.

On World Read Aloud Day and beyond, The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Public Library offer resources for families to start reading aloud together and help children learn to love reading.

The New York Public Library (serving the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island)

The New York Public Library (NYPL) offers free programs, books, and resources throughout the year to help little ones read, learn, and have fun! Come to your local branch and engage in a wide variety of free early childhood programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers that help children learn the power of the written word. Get a New York Public Library card today!

Join the 125th Street Library for a special World Read Aloud Day celebration on Wednesday, February 4, from 10:30AM to 12PM. The event will include early literacy activities and free book giveaways for little ones and their adult caregivers! Registration is optional.
Find a storytime near you where attendees can find live programs with songs, rhymes, and favorite read-aloud books.
Look forward to the April return of Little Learners, a program where special guests bring music, movement, and multilingual fun to the Library.
For parents detained on Rikers Island, Let’s Read Together! is an early literacy program that helps families stay connected through reading: Parents participate in a literacy workshop and record themselves reading a book or excerpt, which is shared with their student at home so they can follow along while hearing their parent’s voice.
Attend a virtual support group series for caregivers of infants 0–18 months, hosted by a local doula.

Brooklyn Public Library

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) has 62 neighborhood libraries that host programs for all ages and interests. Sign up for a free Brooklyn Public Library card to get instant access to BPL’s e-books, audiobooks and online resources, and be sure to visit your local library soon.

On Wednesday, February 4, attend a World Read Aloud Day program at a neighborhood library near you.
Bring little ones to the library every day for storytime at BPL, a fun program of books, rhymes, songs, and movement activities. Come early to play with toys and make new friends!
Help kids get ready for school with Ready, Set, Kindergarten, a six-session reading readiness series that encourages the development of early learning practices, rooted in the Science of Reading.
Join our Tween Book Club, a low-stakes, self-paced book club for grades 4–7! Our February pick is Kiki's Delivery Service by Eiko Kadono. Copies of the book and discussion packets are available for pickup at Adams Street Library.

Queens Public Library

Queens Public Library (QPL) is made up of over 60 locations across Queens providing a range of educational and literacy programs and essential resources for all ages. Visit QPL in person, check out QPL's online resources, or join us for upcoming QPL programs. This is also a great time to get a new QPL card or update your current one.

Designed for little ones and their caregivers, QPL's Early Learning programs create a welcoming, joyful environment for young children to learn, play, and grow. Parents and caregivers are also offered the tools to raise children who love learning and reading. Adults receive access to useful resources, informational support, hands-on activities, and much more.
QPL's wide range of storytimes feature books, songs, fingerplays, and more activities that are carefully curated by our team of knowledgeable librarians to support young children at various stages of development. Bilingual storytimes are offered in Spanish, Chinese, American Sign Language (ASL), and more!
The QPL Baby program is especially designed for expecting parents and new families, providing access to valuable programs, services and resources, including health workshops, dedicated support groups, and engaging educational programs for both caregivers and their little ones.
QPL’s Kickoff to Kindergarten (K2K) program enables three- and four-year-old children to develop their early literacy skills—and begin a lifelong love of reading! Meanwhile parents and caregivers are guided to become confident in their ability to support their child’s development over seven weeks. Registration for in-person and virtual K2K classes is currently open!
