The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

Find Your Joy During National Library Week (4/19–4/25)

Published April 17, 2026

The American Library Association (ALA) has designated April 19–25, 2026, as National Library Week, with the theme “Find Your Joy” to encourage people of all ages to explore what sparks joy at their local libraries. The campaign highlights the role of libraries in transforming lives, fostering learning, and providing free access to resources, stories, and community programs. Join the celebration at The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library and your school library!

  • Students are always welcome at NYPL After School, a free drop-in program for kids aged 6–12 that takes place after regular school hours, Monday to Thursday. Join us at a participating branch for homework help, reading recommendations, fun activities—and even snacks!
  • Meet the authors of your favorite children’s books at the Library’s free KidsLIVE events! Coming up, join us for this April 21 edition featuring Mona Damluji, the writer of NYPL’s Best Books for Kids 2025 pick I Want You To Know.
  • Explore free programming for kids and teens at your neighborhood library, including an array of special upcoming NYPL Green programs celebrating Earth Day around April 22.
  • Visit an NYPL Teen Center, welcoming spaces in libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, created just for teens, that are open for you to collaborate, make new friends, read, and enjoy all the Library has to offer. From video equipment to gaming consoles to art supplies—everything is free to use!
  • NYPL’s College and Career Pathways team is here for you at 40 branches, whether you're working on college applications or trying to figure out what career is best for you, with resources, individual counseling and FAFSA help, college and career prep workshops, and programs to help you take the next big step.
  • For Educators: Bring joy into your classroom by teaching about how pigs once roamed free in NYC, how NYC’s first playgrounds were created, and more with our collections of primary sources. Plus, explore books from authors of color and download the accompanying educator guide.
    • Last chance to apply! Discover the joy of teaching with rare archival materials at NYPL’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building by applying to NYPL’s Summer Educator Residency by the deadline on Sunday, May 10, 2026. Participation includes lodging, round-trip travel to New York City, and a $1,000 program stipend.
