The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

The Month Ahead (May 2026)

Published April 30, 2026

Can you believe that we’re at the last full month of the 2025–26 school year?

Throughout May, expect many end-of-year plans—class exams and projects; New York State tests; school events, performances and trips; and so much more. Teachers are not only planning to end the school year on a high note, they are also laying the groundwork for the upcoming 2026–27 school year.

Attend your school’s final round of Parent-Teacher Conferences and learn how your child is doing in all classes. Do they have missed assignments to catch up on, and can they do extra credit to boost their grades before school is out for the year?

May is not all about schoolwork, it is also a month of celebration and remembrance. Our schools will be commemorating the history and heritage of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Jewish Americans in the United States. And near the end of the month, schools will be closed in honor of Memorial Day, as well as to celebrate Eid-al-Adha.

May the Fourth be with you as we raise a toast to the superheroes in our classrooms during Teacher Appreciation Week on May 4–8. Following that week of festivities comes Mother's Day! So don’t forget to give the most influential people in your child’s life—in and out of school—their flowers (literally and figuratively)!

May also has a few key dates for public school families to keep in mind: the last day to accept your child’s Summer Rising offer (May 5), this year's release dates for 2026 3-K (May 19) and Pre-K (May 13) offers, and the last days of Gifted and Talented (G&T) for Grades 1–4 admissions for fall 2026 (May 20). And ahead of the summer heat, we are making plans for our fourth and final Climate Action Day on May 20, with a focus on water consumption. Speak with your child’s school about their activities and learn how you can apply their lessons at home.

With May blooming with events and activities, let's dive into the official 2025–26 NYC Public Schools calendar and see what else is happening this month at NYC Public Schools (NYCPS).

Additional notes about this month's schedule:

May is Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month

NY State's ELA, Math, and ESLAT Tests in May

New York State will be administering tests throughout May to different groups of students. Note that exam dates and times vary by school:

  • Mathematics (Grades 3–8): May 1–8 (the testing period began April 28)
  • English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT)—Speaking Portion (Grades K–12): May 4–22
  • Science (Grades 5–8): May 12–15

All three tests will be scored and evaluated in compliance with policies established by both the State Education Department and NYC Public Schools. Speak with your child's teachers to learn your school's exact testing dates and times, as well as for any questions regarding testing accommodations, if applicable.

May's Climate Action Day: "Water" (May 20)

On Wednesday, May 20, NYCPS across the five boroughs is celebrating this year's fourth and final official Climate Action Day. This month's Climate Action Day theme is "Water," and participating schools will be hosting activities that promote water conservation and stewardship for freshwater sources.
