Guidance Counselor Assigned “A” Pathways Advising Specialist
(For Internal Candidates Only)
(One Year Position)
Location:
Division of the First Deputy Chancellor
Office of Student Pathways, Itinerant, serving multiple schools
Eligibility Requirements:
Licensed, appointed and tenured full-time New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) School Counselor Assigned with a minimum of three (3) years of Satisfactory (“S”) or higher performance ratings, along with an exemplary record of attendance and punctuality.
Selection Criteria:
- Demonstrated expertise in college and career advising, including at least three years of experience as a dedicated college and career advisor, completion of an advising and awareness credential, or both; preference will be given to candidates who possess both.
- Extensive expertise and experience as a practitioner in:
- Delivery of individualized, culturally and linguistically responsive college and career advising supports;
- Implementation of data-informed systems and tools to drive improvement, equity, and targeted student supports;
- Development of schoolwide programming that integrates comprehensive advising and awareness experiences for students in grades 6–12.
- Demonstrated success in staff development and whole-school capacity building in the areas listed above.
- Demonstrated experience developing resources and tools to support implementation of high-quality college and career advising.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of NYC Public Schools policies related to student programming, promotion and graduation requirements, and college and career planning.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, including public speaking, facilitation, and the ability to produce clear, concise summaries and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, engage, and build investment among stakeholders.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to anticipate and address challenges proactively.
- Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and the ability to meet tight, frequent, and evolving deadlines.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional learning and development of content expertise.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support counselors, school leaders, and school teams in identifying strengths and areas for growth, and in developing systems and structures to build internal capacity for goal-setting, progress monitoring, and delivery of high-quality college and career advising programs.
- Manage the documentation of school progress and identified challenges, and inform professional learning priorities for school leaders based on school engagement and visits.
- Support schools and district offices in the aligned allocation of College and Career Planning Team resources to ensure high-quality advising and awareness experiences.
- Collaborate with the College and Career Planning Team to design and implement citywide professional learning and training initiatives that build the capacity of high schools to deliver high-quality college and career planning and improve postsecondary readiness outcomes.
- Support implementation of advising and awareness programs aligned to quality standards, equitable access, and strong college and career readiness cultures.
- Prepare and present findings on school progress and systemwide trends in postsecondary outcomes to the College and Career Planning Team and the Office of Student Pathways.
- Support the development and expansion of partnerships to strengthen college and career advising resources and programming at both the central and school levels.
- Collaborate across offices to support internal capacity building and ensure alignment of advising and awareness priorities.
- Support strategic communications to ensure consistent messaging around college and career advising and awareness priorities.
- Support the Senior Director in preparing internal reports for senior leadership, including policy, evaluation, and implementation updates, some of which may be confidential.
- Develop and manage project plans to support systems, processes, and resources related to the school support portfolio.
- Represent the College and Career Planning Team in internal and external meetings, as needed.
- Provide input on program design and make recommendations to leadership based on school and stakeholder feedback.
- Maintain current knowledge of research and best practices in student pathways and college and career advising, including participation in professional learning and field-relevant networks.
Hours:
As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday Through Friday
School Year (September 10, 2026, through June 28, 2027) plus five additional days during the winter, spring, or summer recess, pursuant to UFT contract, as mutually agreed upon with supervisor.
The hours of service of a counselor-assigned shall be thirty-seven and one-half (37.5) hours per week, exclusive of a daily thirty-minute lunch period. Flexibility for an earlier start or later finish to the workday may be permitted, subject to supervisor approval. Counselors-Assigned may apply for and, if selected, work up to 30 per session days during the summer vacation period, beginning July 2026.
