Position is one year – renewal based on funding and performance

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) is responsible for the recruitment of diverse and talented teachers to meet the staffing needs of New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and programs, as well as being responsible for initiatives to promote the equitable and quality distribution of teachers across all schools. Research has repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the single most important variable in raising student learning. The Office accomplishes its work through a strategic, data-driven approach. Among TRQ’s responsibilities are to:

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become NYCPS teachers, to recruit a large, high-quality, equitable and diverse pool of candidates.
  • Design and manage recruitment and preparation programs, and pipelines for individuals to become NYCPS teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas.
  • Select a diverse and high-quality pool of candidates to become teachers through rigorous, research-driven, screening processes.
  • Design and implement high-quality field experiences for teacher candidates in both alternative certification and traditional pathways.
  • Provide inclusive best practices and support to schools to help them make optimal, local hiring decisions.
  • Lead pipeline and pathways to teacher certification for diverse candidates within our communities to promote an equitable distribution of teachers across all schools.
  • Support new teachers with consistent onboarding experiences across the system when they are hired and throughout their first year.

 

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality is recruiting a team of Teacher Recruitment Program Trainers who will support teacher recruitment and preparation initiatives. The Teacher Recruitment Program Trainers will work to ensure that our schools have a robust and diverse pipeline of new teachers and that our new teachers are well-prepared for and supported in their beginning years as teachers. This involves working closely with a range of partners from higher education, districts, nonprofit to other stakeholders to ensure high-quality recruitment, preparation, and onboarding for new and experienced teachers. It also involves ensuring that all new teachers have access to the resources, training, and support they need to be successful in their first year and have a sustained career in NYCPS. ELIGIBILITY:

Tenured teacher with minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching experience

 

REPORTS TO:

Deputy Executive Director of Teacher Development, Induction & Leadership

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Staff within the Division of Human Resources, other NYCPS offices and divisions; pre-service teacher candidates; seasonal / part-time and school-based staff, including teacher leaders and principals, community-based partners, NYC agencies, Higher Education, nonprofit to other stakeholders

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Effective or Highly Effective teacher with a minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience; middle school and high school level experience preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in teacher training, coaching, and development
  • Experience and success coaching/mentoring adults; knowledge of specific coaching/mentoring skills preferred.
  • Experience establishing and managing program partnerships
  • Strong relationship management skills with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Exemplary and compelling oral and written communication skills.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of NYS standards and culturally responsive practices, with the ability to manage and analyze data related to teacher preparation programs, while maintaining professionalism, reliability, and flexibility to support program needs outside regular hours.

     

  • External Partnership Program
    • Coordinates cross-functional projects in collaboration with colleagues and on behalf of the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality.
    • Designs and delivers presentations for university audiences to communicate the priorities of NYCPS regarding teacher preparation, teacher evaluation, new teacher readiness, and instructional priorities. Collect and analyze data to assess partnership effectiveness and inform decision-making.
    • Promotes a culture of continuous learning and improvement, using data to refine strategies and enhance partnership impact.
    • Coordinates with partners and district stakeholders to enhance program quality, increase diversity in teacher candidates, and improve preparation for incoming NYCPS teachers.

       

  • Recruitment and Pathway Programs
    • Supports the planning, strategy, and operations of the Pathways team, including teacher recruitment strategies, budget, and KPI metrics.
    • Supports the PD curriculum development for all teacher pathway programs, with an eye to cultural relevance, and streamline program support across pathway programs.

       

  • Review, Selection and Enrollment of Alternative Certification Teachers
    • Assists in the oversight of the recruitment and selection process for alternative-certification programs such as the New York City Teaching Fellows, ensuring that all pre-service teacher candidates are prepared for Day 1 Readiness. This includes management of interviews and supporting workflows for selection and enrollment.

       

  • Strategic Partnerships and Staffing Support
    • Collaborates with principals, school leaders, and field staff to assess staffing needs and implement strategic hiring initiatives that support class size mandates and address high-need subject areas and schools.
    • Works with the Division of Early Childhood, Community-Based Organizations, and divisional partners to develop targeted staffing strategies and assists in the oversight of the recruitment of Talent Acquisition Associates and consultants to strengthen overall hiring capacity.

       

  • Teacher Preparation
    • Assists in recruiting and selecting school-based roles such as Teacher Development Facilitators to ensure new teachers are paired with high-quality mentors and coaches.
    • Designs and maintains coursework/curriculum experiences for pre-service teachers and those pursuing extension licenses.
    • Designs training for teachers on teacher development strategies and the use of teacher evaluation rubrics in pre-service training and induction support.
    • Supports a portfolio of school partnerships toward successful program implementation through on-site observation and support.
    • Provides program support for key initiatives, including the Empire State Teacher Residency.
    • Provides program support for key initiatives in teacher recognition, including the Big Apple Awards and District Champions; designs related professional development.
    • Provides program support and coordination for the After School Professional Development Program, including review and quality assurance in alignment with NYCPS instructional priorities.

       

  • Teacher Recruitment to Retention Continuum Partnerships
    • Designs and facilitates professional learning in support of District partnerships and scaling use of Teacher Retention Toolkit.
    • Facilitates Community of Practice for the District Liaisons.

September 1 to August 31; 31 days' vacation

Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday or equivalent
