POSITION TITLE:

Teacher Assigned A – Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality - Teacher Development Specialist

Position is one year – renewal based on funding and performance

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) is responsible for the recruitment of diverse and talented teachers to meet the staffing needs of New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and programs, as well as being responsible for initiatives to promote the equitable and quality distribution of teachers across all schools. Research has repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the single most important variable in raising student learning. The Office accomplishes its work through a strategic, data-driven approach. Among TRQ’s responsibilities are to: 

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become NYCPS teachers, to recruit a large, high-quality, equitable and diverse pool of candidates. 
  • Design and manage recruitment and preparation programs, and pipelines for individuals to become NYCPS teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas. 
  • Select a diverse and high-quality pool of candidates to become teachers through rigorous, research-driven, screening processes. 
  • Design and implement high-quality field experiences for teacher candidates in both alternative certification and traditional pathways. 
  • Provide inclusive best practices and support to schools to help them make optimal, local hiring decisions. 
  • Lead pipeline and pathways to teacher certification for diverse candidates within our communities to promote an equitable distribution of teachers across all schools. 
  • Support new teachers with consistent onboarding experiences across the system when they are hired and throughout their first year.

ELIGIBILITY:

Tenured teacher with minimum of 5 years of highly effective or effective teaching experience  

REPORTS TO:

Deputy Executive Director of Teacher Development, Induction & Leadership

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Staff within the Division of Human Resources, other NYCPS offices and divisions; pre-service teacher candidates; seasonal / part-time and school-based staff, including teacher leaders and principals

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Extensive expertise in instruction at the elementary, middle, or high school level
  • Advanced Degree in Education
  • Knowledge regarding current research and research practices of education, with specific regard for mentoring and adult learning
  • Knowledge regarding current research and practices of culturally responsive teaching
  • The ability to develop, plan, and implement diverse types of support for new teachers
  • Ability to establish supports and structures that operate at scale
  • Ability to form strategic partnerships to broaden the reach of support to new teachers
  • Demonstrated effective instructional excellence, classroom management, and organization skills
  • Demonstrated creative and innovative approaches to instruction that led to greater student engagement and learning
  • Experience developing and leading professional learning
  • Support in the development and evaluation of practices to facilitate continuous improvement
  • Excellent public speaking, oral and written communication, organizational, technological, and group facilitation skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to be flexible with work schedules and tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Build cohesion in their work with others to bridge the support of pre-service and in-service development of early career educators
  • Willingness to travel to schools and meetings throughout the city
  • Excellent record of attendance, punctuality, and professionalism
  • Willingness to attend job specific professional development throughout the year, especially regarding culturally responsive teaching and racial literacy

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Identifies and develops resources to support capacity building around mentoring and teacher development
  • Conducts needs assessments and analyses using both qualitative and quantitative data to identify key priorities for mentors and new teacher development.
  • Seeks research-based, innovative solutions to address key areas of need.
  • Ensures the engagement of all relevant stakeholders
  • Tracks relevant data using Mentor Tracking System
  • Participates in Teacher Development Specialist Meetings
  • Participates in the development and facilitation of courses, modules, events, New Teacher Week, and on-going professional development for mentors
  • Plans and delivers professional development opportunities for school–based mentors
  • Captures and disseminates best practices and research on quality mentoring
  • Ensures that schools with new teachers have an induction plan (in MTS) and conduct monthly data tracking and reporting to inform planning
  • Supports school-based mentors and school leaders in the implementation of quality school-based mentoring programs
  • Collaborates closely with Senior Director of Mentoring on resources and policy that aligns with NYSED
  • Acts as a liaison to Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality to share critical teacher development needs emerging from the field
  • Works with teacher leaders, school leaders, districts, and other partners to ensure strong supports across the recruitment to retention continuum
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the overall success of the team and office.

September 1 – June 30

Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday

School year plus five additional days during winter, spring, or summer vacation period
