Itinerant Special Education Teacher

(ONE YEAR POSITION)
Location:
Itinerant Special Education Teacher positions throughout all 5 boroughs. Assignments include provision of service to school-age students and will be itinerant, where possible in contiguous districts, but in all cases, one borough only. This role is a central position that works in schools daily and follows the NYCPS school calendar with the addition of the 5 additional days as per the UFT contract. This position’s primary focus is provision of services to students with Individualized Education Services Plans (IESPs) that attend non-public schools and receive Special Education services from NYCPS during the school day. Positions available in all boroughs. The positions report to the NPS Special Education Consultation Unit of the Division of Inclusive and Accessible Learning (DIAL) and are assigned to nonpublic school settings, including private independent and religious schools. Assignments subject to change, within the same borough, dependent on student caseload assignments.
Eligibility:
Current New York State certified special education teacher
Selection Criteria:
- Ability to provide both group and individual SETSS to students attending nonpublic school settings, including private independent and religious elementary schools and secondary schools within their school of attendance and/or at NYCPS service sites.
- Ability to travel daily between nonpublic school sites and/or NYCPS service sites
- Preference given to special education teachers with a bilingual extension who are fluent in Yiddish
- Knowledge of the continuum of services, the special education process, regulations of the NYSED Commissioner, regulations of the NYCPS Chancellor
- Ability to communicate with families, agencies, and school personnel.
- Ability to articulate relationship between SETSS and learning outcomes and/or SETSS and academic outcomes and contribute to quality IEP/IESP development.
- Ability to maintain progress monitoring records and prepare progress reports to be shared with CSE teams, schools, and families in a timely manner
- Strong interpersonal skills necessary to collaborate with nonpublic and religious school stakeholders, IEP/IESP team and CSE team, (including parents) and other disciplines as necessary.
- Ability and willingness to work independently in a school setting and manage time, timekeeping and responsibilities including work in different locations with varying expectations
- Ability to work with and collaborate in non-public school settings that may have policies and procedures in place that differ from NYCPS
- Ability to develop and present professional development and parent training opportunities
- Strong organization and time management skills
- Proficiency in the use of NYCPS systems related to special education
- Understanding of how to support students’ diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Reporting to the NPS Special Education Consultation Unit within the Division of Inclusive and Accessible Learning (DIAL), Itinerant Special Education Teacher Assigned will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Provide SETSS in accordance with IEP/IESP mandates to students in one or more private/religious nonpublic schools within an assigned borough. Service provision will take place in the students’ schools or in NYCPS service sites.
- Provide SETSS services that include Specially Designed Instruction and planned lessons that integrate the general education curriculum as possible and appropriate
- Provided services may be push in, pull out, group, and individual within the nonpublic school setting
- Integrate provision of SETSS services into the student’s classroom and natural learning environment.
- Consult with nonpublic school and supervisory staff on matters relating to SETSS and specialized instruction, including methodology, adjustments to the learning environment, modifying instructional methods and developing individual goals and objectives for students as per IEP/IESP.
- Collaborate with nonpublic school teachers regularly to ensure alignment between SETSS services and access to the general education curriculum of the nonpublic school
- Participate in multidisciplinary and parent conferences to discuss student progress and provide recommendations for service delivery in the least restrictive environment.
- Conduct classroom observations, educational assessments, prepare written reports, attend IEP/IESP meetings, and develop IEPs and/or IESPs for school-aged students with disabilities
- Maintain progress monitoring records to share in progress reports to families and with CSE to inform the IEP and IESP process for students on caseload
- Use data to inform planning and facilitation of SETSS services
- Collaborate on the development of quality IEPs and IESPs with school staff and CSE.
- Train & collaborate with classroom staff, including paraprofessionals, regarding student-specific interventions as well as classroom-based interventions, at the school-age level.
- Consult with school personnel on tiered classroom support.
- Participate in collaborative planning time and/or professional development as organized with non public school setting in support of student services.
- Participate actively in professional development time and PLC opportunities with the NPS Itinerant SETSS teacher team
- Maintain contemporaneous Encounter Attendance records, as directed
- Maintain all related information in specified NYCPS information systems
- Other related duties consistent with this posting
Salary:
As per UFT collective Bargaining Agreement
Work Schedule:
- 8:00 am-4:00 pm or 8:30 am-4:30 pm, depending on the site assignment schedule.
- Applicable for one school year term, reapplication and selection process will take place at the approval of supervisor.
- Adequate travel time will be incorporated into daily work schedule as needed.
- The work year of a teacher assigned whose work is preponderantly connected with schools and school year instructional programs, shall be the same work year as a day school teacher and in addition the teacher assigned will be required to serve a week (5 additional days) during the winter recess, spring recess or the summer vacation period through June 30.
- Opportunities for remote work are significantly limited and subject to approval at the discretion of the supervisor.
