New York City public schools has a bold vision: through a reimagined student experience that centers career-connected learning, all students will reach long-term economic security. This vision is one where academic excellence is integrated with real-world skills and experience—giving students a head start on college and career, and helping them build a strong plan toward a path to a rewarding career. Career-connected learning is an essential part of this vision.
FutureReadyNYC
FutureReadyNYC (FRNYC) s a multi-year initiative where participating schools choose to build one of four career pathways: business, education, healthcare, or technology. Through this career-connected pathway, participating students will:
- Explore a range of careers and take classes aligned to a career that interests them,
- Develop 21st century skills including digital and financial literacy,
- Get real-world, paid work experiences like internships,
- Earn early college credit and industry-validated credentials, and
- Be supported with personalized college and career planning to ensure successful transition into college and/or careers that provide family-sustaining wages.
Through this pilot, schools and educators will receive support and funding to develop labor market-aligned pathways to ensure that students are ready for successful futures. FutureReadyNYC will prepare students with real skills, a strong plan for after high school, and a head start for where they are going, including through college credits and/or industry-aligned credentials. FutureReadyNYC will also engage NYC employers to offer internships and other work-based learning experiences and higher education, including CUNY campuses, for early college credit aligned to careers. FutureReadyNYC will catalyze opportunities for schools, educators and students to learn about how career-connected learning can work best in NYC schools.
Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship
Career Readiness and Modern Youth Apprenticeship (CRMYA) is the result of a deep partnership between New York City Public Schools and CareerWise New York with the goal to create a career path for NYCPS students that layers paid work experience with post-secondary credits and industry credentials.
Participating schools integrate career readiness coursework into the school day for all 9th and 10th graders to create a foundational understanding of apprenticeships and their own personal career interests. During their junior year of high school, students apply for an apprenticeship. If accepted, they commit to a two- to three- year paid work experience, depending upon the occupational title. Once in an apprenticeship, students attend school in the mornings Monday through Thursday and all day Friday. They are at their place of work Monday through Thursday in the afternoons.
CRMYA builds career readiness skills for NYCPS students, creates meaningful career opportunities for apprentices, and builds learnings that can be applied in other schools to support development of career readiness skills.
