City Tests
These are optional tests that families can request for entrance into programs or schools that offer specialized instruction and enrichment opportunities.

State Tests
These tests are required by NY State Education Department, including those that may be used to meet graduation requirements.

Please note: As previously shared in the June 2022 Statewide Implementation of Computer-Based Testing memorandum, the New York State Education Department set forth details regarding plans to fully transition to computer-based testing (CBT) for the Grades 3–8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests and the Elementary-level (Grade 5) and Intermediate-level (Grade 8) Science Tests. In Spring 2026 all students in Grades 3 through 8 will be required to take ELA, Mathematics, and Science Tests via CBT.
For computer-based ELA and mathematics testing, schools will select two consecutive days within the respective main administration windows to administer assessments for each grade level and subject. Schools must test the entire grade on the same two consecutive school days for each subject. Make-up tests for CBT can be administered anytime within the main administration window. For Science, Schools can select the administration date within main administration window. However, the entire grade must test on the same day. Science make-ups can be administered anytime within the main administration window.
National Tests for College Admissions
These are tests offered to students nationwide. New York City schools administer these tests during the school day.
