The New York City Emergency Management Department (NYCEM) has issued a Travel Advisory for the afternoon of Tuesday, August 6 into the morning of Wednesday, August 7, 2024 due to expected heavy rain conditions. Please visit nyc.gov/site/severeweather/index.page for the latest information.
Summer programming will proceed as scheduled. All programming will remain in session until the usual end time of 6 PM. Parents and guardians are welcome to pick up their students earlier if they wish to do so. Families in flood-prone and low-lying areas should plan for potential delays in busing and public transportation. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your program’s principal in charge or call 311.
Yellow bus service will proceed as usual, although it is possible there may be delays on individual routes. Buses will be pre-parked near their assigned pickup locations to facilitate safe and timely dismissal. If the school’s usual bus loading area cannot be accessed, principals in charge will work with their transportation coordinator and bus staff to identify appropriate alternate exits and loading points.
Public School Athletic League (PSAL) events and afterschool activities will proceed as scheduled. Scheduled outdoor PSAL activities may be moved inside or canceled due to weather conditions—please check with your program.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch citywide from 2PM Tuesday, August 6 to noon Wednesday, August 7.
Heavy rain may result in widespread minor flooding across the city, with a danger of flash flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Flooded roadways could create travel delays and disruptions during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commute. Minor flooding of structures and properties will also be possible. Heavy rain may create dangerous travel conditions.
Schools in areas that may be affected by localized minor flooding have received direct guidance on pre-storm preparation and safety and are taking all appropriate steps to ensure facilities and staff are prepared for any potential weather complications.
The safety of our students, staff, and families as they travel to and from school is of the utmost importance. New Yorkers are encouraged to use public transportation during storm conditions and use caution when walking, biking, and driving and allow for additional travel time. There may be delays on MTA subway and bus routes. Do not drive into flooded streets or enter flooded subway stations.
NYC Public Schools’ Central and field offices remain open. We urge staff to exercise caution when going outside and to use public transportation whenever possible.
Safety Tips
- New Yorkers are advised to limit travel and stay inside during periods of severe weather.
- If you must drive, drive slowly. Use major streets or highways for travel whenever possible. Do not drive your vehicle or walk into areas where water covers the roadway as the water depth may be too great to allow you to cross safely.
