Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Citywide Autism Programs and Director of AIMS Programs, the Autism Program School Psychologist supports the program director and borough manager’s implementation of citywide specialized programs for students’ autism, develops and facilitates professional learning opportunities for staff in Specialized Autism Program schools and community schools working with students with autism. The Autism Program School Psychologist is responsible for supporting the fidelity of implementation to the Autism Nest, Horizon and AIMS Program models, driving process and program improvement, and building capacity in all community schools to support autistic students.
As part of the Central Autism Team, the School Psychologist will work closely with school based IEP teams, school building leadership and specialized programs teams, consult with district offices when appropriate and Superintendent’s teams to ensure that autism Programs and related processes comply with local, state, and federal policies and requirements for special education and autism program-specific service delivery. The Autism Programs School Psychologist, under the direction and supervision of the Director of Citywide Programs and borough managers, works to ensure alignment to broader NYCPS priorities, initiatives, and timelines. S/he will also work to strengthen family and community engagement, a critical goal of NYCPS, and will regularly represent Specialized Program at internal meetings, joint initiatives with outside agencies, and community-based programs. Key Relationships:
Special Education Office (SEO) instructional team, policy team, and family/community engagement team; Office of Student Enrollment (OSE); Office of District Planning (ODP); Administrators for Special Education (ASE), and Student Support Services Liaisons (3SLs), Superintendents, Autism Program partners.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct observations and other assessment of students who are being assessed for an Autism program
- Conduct ADOS evaluations for Autism program applicants when appropriate
- Work collaboratively with school IEP teams, school based and central staff facilitating the application process providing specific information about Autism programs
- Demonstrated successful experience interacting and working collaboratively with families including regularly providing a description and answering any questions about Autism programs in order to enhance the reciprocal partnership between parents and Central Autism Team, investing time learning about each individual applicant’s skills abilities and strengths.
- Provide information, professional development, training, and technical assistance on the referral, assessment, and evaluation of culturally and linguistically diverse students with suspected and/or identified disabilities including autism.
- Keep timely records and complete reports as required e.g. observation reports and entering information into systems of record
- Attend conferences, develop and present professional development as required.
- Participate in the development of programs for students with Autism including identifying students and working collaboratively with school staff.
- Provide high-level consultation, technical assistance, and direct support to Autism Program schools, as well as other community school staff, to build capacity for serving students with Autism under the supervision of the Director of Citywide Autism Programs and borough Managers
- Strong organizational and analytical skills to track applications and adhering to process timelines
- To support and advance NYCPS’s Autism Program expansion and quality efforts by providing policy consultation, technical/pedagogical assistance, and oversight reports to field support and school staff.
- Conducts school visits, classroom observations, and staff conferences to make recommendations and assess program needs.
- Participate with the team, under the supervision of the Director, to drive efforts to systematically and regularly review best practices regarding processes, policies, guidelines, and protocols for identification, evaluation, and recommendation of students for Autism Programs.
- Provide support across all three autism programs, Nest Horizon and AIMS, and any new initiatives related to supporting autistic learners.
- Review applications and protocols for preschool students joining specialized programs
- Consult with Specialized Programs beyond Autism Programs to utilize their clinical expertise in supporting student placement across bilingual special education, Academic Career, and Essential Skills (ACES), Path, IREAD, Inclusion and other similar Specialized Programs
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
- Master's Degree in School Psychology.
- Minimum of five (5) years satisfactory experience working with students with disabilities, including students with autism.
- Possession of a valid NYC DOE license and/or certification
Plus
- Experience conducting observations, evaluations and assessments of students with autism including ADOS training and experience.
- Evidence of building strong relationships with professional peers, parents, and community members.
- Collaborative approach to managing projects and activities.
- Knowledge of New York State laws relating to the assessment of students with autism.
- Understanding and experience with special education referral, evaluation, and program recommendation processes and practices.
- Willingness to travel to Specialized Program schools throughout New York City.
Preferred
- Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and research-based intervention, therapeutic, and instructional strategies for students with autism in special education instructional programs.
- Experience developing professional development curricula, implementing high-quality professional development cycles, and participatory action initiatives consistent with research- and evidence-based practices.
- Extensive background and experience in special education assessment and instruction.
- Certification in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), such as a licensed Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
- Experience providing professional development on topics related to the assessment, evaluation and education of monolingual, bilingual, and ELL students with autism.
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
