Position:
Teacher Assigned A – Teacher Assigned – ELA Implementation Specialist Elementary Schools
Division of the First Deputy Chancellor
One-year position – Option to reapply – Position commences September 2026
(For Internal Candidates)
Location:
Districts 1-32. Assignment by district
Eligibility:
Applicants must possess a valid New York State teaching certificate and a New York City license in one of the following areas. Tenure is preferred.
- Early Childhood Education (birth–grade 2)
- Childhood Education (Common Branch) (grades 1–6)
- Literacy (birth–grade 6)
- Students with Disabilities (K–12)
- English to Speakers of Other Languages (all grades) (including bilingual)
- Speech and Language Disabilities (all grades)
Selection Criteria:
- At least eight years of successful teaching experience, with significant experience in elementary school ELA
- A minimum of three consecutive years of satisfactory, effective, or highly effective ratings
- Strong knowledge of teacher development
- Demonstrated understanding of reading and writing acquisition and development
- Proven experience and expertise in implementing standards-based ELA curricula
- Demonstrated success collaborating with colleagues on early reading/writing instruction, curriculum, and assessment
- Ability to take initiative in challenging situations and deliver positive outcomes
- Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Preferred:
- Experience as a Literacy Coach
- Knowledge of research-based approaches to ELA instruction, differentiated instruction for multilingual learners and students with disabilities, and data-informed decision-making
- Familiarity with high quality instructional material (including, HMH Into Reading, Expeditionary Learning, and Wit & Wisdom, Fundations, Really Great Reading, etc.)
- Understanding of national, state, and NYCPS ELA standards and curriculum frameworks
- Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate instructional research and best practices to support implementation
- Experience facilitating professional learning, in-class coaching, and collaborative planning
- Ability to clearly present instructional data to inform practice and demonstrate impact
Duties/Responsibilities:
The ELA Implementation Specialist supports school teams in implementing NYCPS-aligned ELA curricula through professional development, collaboration, and coaching.
- During the 2026–2027 school year, conduct needs assessments to identify ELA content and instructional support needs
- Support teachers, teams, and school leaders across districts in alignment with NYCPS’s literacy framework
- Collaborate with central, district, and school leadership to co-create ELA goals and action plans
- Facilitate ELA-focused professional learning and serve as a curriculum implementation lead
- Share best practices in ELA instruction, pedagogy, and assessment aligned to NYCPS initiatives
- Engage schools in analyzing ELA data, student work, and instructional planning
- Monitor and assess the impact of curriculum implementation through qualitative and quantitative data
- Develop individualized implementation plans for each school focused on capacity building and sustainability
- Promote common understanding of promising ELA practices through intervisitation and shared learning
- Use provided implementation tools and resources with support from supervisors
- Maintain accurate records of support activities and outcomes
- Collaborate with fellow ELA specialists to reflect on practice and refine strategies
- Set and review personal implementation goals regularly with a supervisor
- Participate in team meetings and NYCPS-provided professional development
- Attend summer training to build content knowledge and curriculum expertise in ELA
Hours:
As per UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement: 8:00AM – 4:00PM.
Work Year:
School year plus five additional days during winter recess, spring recess, or summer vacation period. Position commences September 2026.
